It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very usual that folks prefer changing their thoughts and hobbies as they get older and wiser. I completely agree with the statement. In the following essay, I will present my opinions upon why I think it is true.

Firstly, usually kids are more likely to follow their parents or guardians in the decision-making process, as children are fully dependent on their folks. Most of the time, youngsters are unaware of the consequences of their actions. They are not aware of their personal opinions as much, whether it is right or wrong for them. But as they start growing up, they get to learn things. For example, bullying someone in school simply looks like a prank as kids, but as they get older, they realize that bullying someone is not ethical. It is not a prank. It is a serious matter.

Secondly, as people grow older, they gain experience in every aspect of life, which in the end changes their thought process. When common folks start doing things independently, they begin to learn different things. For instance, as teens, eating healthy seems as a task as they are more interested in consuming junk food, but as grown-ups, eating healthy would be a lifestyle as they know it is a much better option for them.

In conclusion, I fully agree to the statement that it is very usual for people to change their type of work and insights as they grow up.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt directly by agreeing that people change their habits and opinions as they age, presenting relevant supporting points. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the student's response contains only 241 words, which fails to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. This under-length impacts the full development of ideas, restricting the depth of explanation in the body paragraphs. Additionally, the conclusion introduces a slight deviation by mentioning a change in 'type of work,' which was not discussed in the body paragraphs. Because of the length penalty and minor under-development of ideas, the response aligns best with Band 5.5 descriptors. To improve, ensure you write at least 250 words and keep your conclusion strictly aligned with the main body arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, starting with childhood influences and moving to adult experiences. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'For instance' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although they are at times slightly formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent the cohesion from feeling fully natural. The logical flow is sound, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought easily without confusion. These features place the response solidly within the Band 6.0 category, as the organisation is coherent overall despite some mechanical elements in the linking of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'decision-making process,' 'consequences of their actions,' and 'thought process.' However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'It is very usual that folks' instead of 'It is very common for people,' and 'eating healthy seems as a task' rather than 'eating healthily feels like a chore.' Vocabulary is also occasionally repetitive, with words like 'folks' and 'older' used frequently. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and communication is never impeded by lexical errors. This performance fits the Band 6.0 level, reflecting an adequate vocabulary range that permits straightforward expression alongside some noticeable slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'Most of the time, youngsters are unaware of the consequences of their actions.' There are several instances of good grammatical control, but also a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'eating healthy would be a lifestyle as they know it is a much better option' and 'agree to the statement' instead of 'agree with the statement.' Punctuation is generally functional, though there is a missing space after a full stop in the second paragraph ('them. But as they start...'). The frequency and nature of these errors point clearly to a Band 6.0 score, where a mix of structures is used with some errors that rarely impede communication.
