It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world, people get busy with their lives, careers, family, and many other things, and their interests, habits, and opinions change over time. I strongly believe this notion, and in this essay I will discuss the reasons behind it with relevant examples.

To begin with, a busy life plays a vital role in changing people's habits because it makes them focus on things that are important and add value to their lives. Individuals start evaluating their habits based on their results and benefits. For example, until I was 19 years old, I used to drink chocolate milk in the morning, but now I prefer coffee as it helps me to focus and increase my productivity at work. Moreover, physical fitness is also one of the main reasons which makes people change or adjust their habits. If someone has a habit of cycling, but over time they might need to switch to slow walking because of weak knee joints.

What is more, over time individuals get experienced with life, which helps to form more concrete and strong opinions. For example, one of my friends used to think that he was very shy and nervous whenever he needed to put his opinion in front of other people. However, now he has become very confident after he stayed alone for a few years while he was pursuing the Master's Degree. As a result, over time he became confident and mature, which changed his opinion. Furthermore, in my opinion, life is the biggest teacher, and with age, people face a lot of situations, which change their opinions on many things. For example, my grandfather first thought that smartphones are a waste of time and destroy youth. But now he uses social media, such as Instagram and Facebook, and this happened just because he understood the benefits of it, which made him change his opinion on smartphones.

To sum up, there is no same in changging your habits and opinion with the time. In Hindi, there is one saying, " time sab kuch badal deta hai", which means time changes everything, and nothing is constant.

Referencing is generally clear, and the relationship between sentences is easy to follow. However, minor improvements in the flexibility of cohesive links would be needed to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'productivity', 'concrete', and 'evaluating'. There are, however, some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'put his opinion' instead of 'express his opinion' and the spelling mistake 'changging' in the conclusion. Despite these occasional slips, the meaning remains clear throughout, and communication is not impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses, such as 'until I was 19 years old, I used to drink...' and 'whenever he needed to put his opinion...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'people get busy with their lives' and 'over time individuals get experienced with life', along with minor punctuation issues. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate.
