Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued by many people that their interests and viewpoints towards a particular thing change according to age. I am strongly agree with this notion; I will discuss my viewpoints in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, there are a number of reasons why many people think their habits and opinions change as they get older. The predominant one is, they might have some health issues, so due to this, they may have to change their interests. In other words, as it can be seen that, after a certain age, most older people have heart-related issues, digestive issues, and they may suffer from brain fog. Therefore, owing to some circumstances, their choices and interest is changed. To cite an example, a survey conducted by health experts revealed that 76% of grey-haired individuals improve their health after changing their eating habits. Hence, when folks enter their elder age, they should change their habits.

Furthermore, a few people ponder that, another reason is small families. To explain it, when children grow up, and they are busy with their day-to-day lives. They do not have enough time for their parents to fulfill their desires. For instance, a headline in the famous newspaper 'The Bluffs' revealed that 50% of people in the aged care centres are unable to share their opinions with others because of loneliness. As a result, they have to change their habits and opinions according to their age.

In conclusion, in today's fast-paced era, youngsters are busy in their own lives; also, due to some health issues, older people have to change their habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing how and why people's habits and opinions change as they age. A clear position is stated in the introduction with the phrase 'I am strongly agree with this notion'. The student attempts to extend ideas with reasons related to health issues and family dynamics, such as older people needing to change eating habits or experiencing loneliness. However, the development in the body paragraphs tends to wander slightly into tangents rather than focusing tightly on how opinions shift over time. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the ideas would benefit from deeper elaboration and more direct linkage to the core concept of changing opinions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Standard cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices can feel mechanical or slightly forced. For instance, the transition into the second body paragraph relies on the phrase 'a few people ponder that, another reason is small families', which breaks logical flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, but internal cohesion within the paragraphs requires smoother links to ensure seamless progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items such as 'predominant', 'brain fog', and 'aged care centres'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'grey-haired individuals' and 'enter their elder age'. Additionally, repetitive patterns and basic lexical choices are evident throughout the text. While these limitations do not impede communication, they restrict the score to the mid-range bands, where the vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There is a noticeable grammatical error right at the start with 'I am strongly agree', which uses a verb instead of an adjective. Other awkward structures appear, such as 'as it can be seen that, after a certain age, most older people have...' which results in a fragmented flow. While there are some error-free sentences, frequent minor inaccuracies in punctuation and clause structure persist. These errors rarely impede general communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score.
