IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

A person experiences a significant amount of changes growing up. It is believed that habits and opinions of individuals are altered over the period of time as they age. In my opinion it is true. I agree with the view that with the continuous changes in our life affects the way of perceiving different ideas.

Commencing with the most salient reasons, the priorities and responsibilties of people change at every stage of life. for example, young adults spend considerable amount of time in socialising, eating convinience food and stay up late. However, when they enter the workforce or start a family they adapt healthier routines. They consume healthy food, take care of their body and manage their time and become more conscious of their physical, mental and financial well-being. Such changes are not imposed by others, rather it is a natural response to increasing responsibilities. In addition, greater awareness encourges people to be more mindful of their actions and long-term repurcussions of harmful habits.

Another reason why people change their beliefs is that, with time people gain experience which influences their way of thinking broadens their understanding of life. For instance, in their twenties, young adults have strong opinions about social issues. These views may change when they meet people from different backgrounds and circumstances as they live through different experiences of life. Exposure to different environments, cultures, social and professional settings can influence people to ameliorate their beliefs. This does not mean that everyone completely abandon their earlier beliefs and change their opinions but their beliefs may become more nuanced and open to alternative perspectives.

In conclusion, I agree that both habits and opinions commonly change as people get older. While some core values may remain stable throughout life, changing responsibilities and accumulated experiences can substantially reshape the way individuals behave and perceive the world. Therefore, personal development and ageing are closely connected, making such changes a natural part of life.
