Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly argued that as people get older, they change their habits and their suggestions. I totally agree with this statement because life experience and maturity enable people to make wiser decisions, which can lead to changes in old habits and opinions. This essay will explain the reasons behind it and its impact on their lives.

One of the main reasons is the life lessons learned through the many years of experience. This is because older people can see others' lives and learn from others' mistakes. As a result, there is an impact on every suggestion and habit. For instance, some senior citizens quit their smoking and drinking habits as they know both are harmful to their health. As a person gaining life experience, they are willing to embrace change, which is useful for the rest of their life.

The second main reason is the maturity gained over the course of life. This helps people avoid overreacting, handle problems through discussion over time, and develop practical solutions. As a result, older people take wiser solutions than the younger generation. For example, people seek opinions from older persons to resolve problems. So maturity is a main factor impacting life habits and opinions.

In conclusion, people change their perspectives as they age, especially as they get older. This is mainly because life experience and maturity help them to take practical solutions. I agree with the statement for the reasons I explained in the essay. As getting older is a

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response presents a clear position agreeing with the prompt, and supporting ideas regarding life experience and maturity are provided. However, the student misinterprets the word 'opinions' from the prompt as 'suggestions' in the opening sentence ('habits and their suggestions'), which slightly impacts task focus. Ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as senior citizens quitting smoking, though the explanation remains somewhat repetitive. Furthermore, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response contains 248 words and cuts off mid-sentence at the end. Consequently, these limitations prevent the task response from reaching higher bands, aligning it with Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement and follows a standard four-paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced with clear transitional phrases such as 'One of the main reasons', 'The second main reason', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is generally clear. However, cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic. While the ending is incomplete due to running out of words, the overall flow and organizational structure remain logical, supporting a solid Band 6.5 rating.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'senior citizens', 'maturity', 'overreacting', and 'perspectives'. There are a few noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, most notably substituting 'opinions' with 'suggestions' in the introduction ('habits and their suggestions') and awkward phrasing like 'take wiser solutions' instead of 'make wiser decisions'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical performance comfortably within the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well, such as 'As a person gaining life experience, they are willing to embrace change...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, including 'As a person gaining life experience, they' (reference agreement issue), 'take practical solutions', and prepositional inaccuracies like 'over the course of life'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and errors rarely impede overall comprehension. This balance of structures and controlled error frequency corresponds to a Band 6.0.
