Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the last decade human behaviour has changed drastically. It is often argued that age has a greater impact on their behaviour and thinking patterns. I agree with the statement because when people get older their ideas and actions transform according to their responsibilities and their life experiences.

To begin with, when people get old, their responsibilities change according to their status. Kids are focused on their studies, teenagers are focused on their higher studies and career targets. However, when they come to age twenty-five or thirty, they are more focused on finding a life partner or career development. By the time individuals focus moves to look after their children, buying a house and having a stable income. These life stage movements change society's responsibilities and ultimately these will affect their habits and opinions. As an example, younger kids visit library weekly, but elders visit hospitals and workplaces.

Another thing is people's experiences. When they get older, they have many life experiences which change their personality. It is really different the way a less experienced person looks at the world. Therefore, their thinking and actions are different from an experienced person. For instance, an experienced businessman's approach towards a new market trend different from an inexperienced businessman. Thus, life experiences change people's habits and opinions.

In conclusion, over the time people's behaviour and thinking patterns changed because of their changing responsibilities and life experiences. I agree with this statement as life stage changes have a high impact on human habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt by stating an agreement with the idea that people change their habits and opinions as they age. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The main ideas regarding responsibilities and life experiences are introduced and supported with explanations and examples, such as comparing the focus of teenagers to those in their twenties, and the example of an experienced businessman. While the ideas are relevant, some points are slightly under-developed, for instance, the brief mention that younger kids visit the library while elders visit hospitals and workplaces, which lacks full elaboration. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main ideas, such as responsibilities in the second paragraph and life experiences in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, including 'To begin with', 'However', and 'Thus', though some connections feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional minor logical links between sentences could be smoother, such as the sudden shift regarding library and hospital visits. Overall, the organizational structure is logical and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about aging, responsibilities, and experience. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'thinking patterns', 'stable income', and 'career development'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'come to age twenty-five' instead of 'reach the age of twenty-five', 'focus moves to look after' instead of 'focus shifts to looking after', and 'over the time' instead of 'over time'. Spelling is generally accurate, and while these lexical errors are present, they do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses like 'when people get older their ideas and actions transform'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('individual focus moves' instead of 'individuals' focuses move', 'market trend different' missing a verb) and article usage ('younger kids visit library weekly'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but prepositional errors also occur. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they are frequent enough to restrict the score to Band 5.5, reflecting a limitation in grammatical accuracy when attempting more complex forms.
