Student answer (Band 6.5)

Over the last decade, human behaviour has changed drastically. It is often argued that age has a greater impact on people’s behaviour and thinking patterns. I agree with the statement because when people get older their ideas and actions transform according to their responsibilities and their life experiences.

One of the main reasons why I agree with this statement is that when people get old, their responsibilities change according to their status. Kids are focused on their studies, teenagers are focused on their higher studies and career targets. However, when they come to age twenty-five or thirty, they are more focused on finding a life partner or career development. By the time an individual’s focus moves to looking after their children, buying a house and having a stable income. As a result, these life stage movements change personal responsibilities and ultimately these factors affect their habits and opinions. As an example, younger kids visit the library frequently, while elders visit hospitals and workplaces. Therefore, the responsibilities change people's habits and opinions.

Another important reason is that people's experiences. In other words, when they get older, they have many life experiences which change their personality. It is really different the way a less experienced person looks at the world. Therefore, their thinking and actions are different from an experienced person. For instance, an experienced businessman's approach towards a new market trend is different from an inexperienced businessman. Hence, life experiences change people's habits and opinions.

In conclusion, over time people's behaviour and thinking patterns change because of their changing responsibilities and life experiences. Therefore, I completely agree with this statement as life stage changes have a high impact on human habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear position of agreement and exploring how shifting responsibilities and life experiences alter human habits and opinions over time. Ideas are generally well-supported with logical explanations, such as tracking how priorities shift from academic focus in youth to career and family development in adulthood. However, some of the supporting arguments and examples tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, such as the brief contrast between younger kids visiting the library and elders visiting hospitals, which lacks deeper extension. Despite this minor limitation, the overall task response is clear, relevant, and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation throughout. Each body paragraph begins with a clear topic sentence introducing a distinct reason for the writer's stance. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'However', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically. While referencing and substitution are occasionally a bit mechanical—such as the repeated reliance on 'people's habits and opinions'—the logical flow and overall structure remain sound and easy to follow, aligning well with the characteristics of a Band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'responsibilities', 'career development', 'life experiences', and 'personality'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but occasional inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing occur, such as writing 'when they come to age twenty-five or thirty' instead of 'reach the age of' or 'turn twenty-five or thirty', and 'It is really different the way a less experienced person looks at the world', which features awkward phrasing. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and multi-clause constructions such as 'when people get older their ideas and actions transform according to their responsibilities'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, such as 'One of the main reasons why I agree with this statement is that when people get old' (missing object/noun phrase like 'they grow older') and 'Another important reason is that people's experiences' (fragmented predicate). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, supporting a Band 6 score.
