Student answer (Band 7.0)

Over the last decade, human behaviour has changed drastically. It is often argued that age has a greater impact on people’s behaviour and thinking patterns. I agree with the statement because when people get older their ideas and actions transform according to their responsibilities and their life experiences.

One of the main reasons why I agree with this statement is that when people get old, their responsibilities change according to their status. Kids are focused on their studies, teenagers are focused on their higher studies and career targets. However, when they come to age twenty-five or thirty, they are more focused on finding a life partner or career development. By the time, an individual’s focus moves to looking after their children, buying a house and having a stable income. As a result, these life stage movements change personal responsibilities and ultimately these factors affect their habits and opinions. As an example, younger kids visit the library frequently, while older adults visit hospitals and workplaces. Therefore, the responsibilities change people's habits and opinions.

Another important reason is that people's experiences shape them. In other words, when they get older, they have many life experiences which change their personality. It is really different the way a less experienced person looks at the world. Therefore, their thinking and actions are different from an experienced person. For instance, an experienced businessman's approach towards a new market trend is different from an inexperienced businessman. Hence, life experiences change people's habits and opinions.

In conclusion, over time people's behaviour and thinking patterns change because of their changing responsibilities and life experiences. Therefore, I completely agree with this statement as life stage changes have a high impact on human habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses all parts of the task by taking a firm position that people change both habits and opinions as they age, and maintaining this stance throughout. Main ideas are presented and supported with logical reasoning related to life stages and responsibilities. For example, the student notes how shifting priorities from education in youth to career and family in adulthood naturally alters actions and viewpoints. While the examples given, such as younger kids visiting libraries versus older adults visiting workplaces, are somewhat generalised, they adequately support the central arguments. The progression of ideas is logical and the task is fully satisfied according to the band 7 descriptors, as the position is clear and ideas are extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation throughout. Each body paragraph focuses on a distinct central theme—firstly responsibilities and secondly life experiences—which makes the progression easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate introduction, body arguments, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with phrases like 'One of the main reasons', 'However', and 'In conclusion' guiding the reader smoothly. However, some referencing is slightly repetitive, and certain cohesive links feel a bit mechanical, such as 'In other words' followed immediately by 'when they get older'. Despite these minor flaws in cohesion management, the text maintains clear logical flow, aligning well with the band 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocation phrases such as 'thinking patterns', 'career development', 'stable income', and 'market trend'. Word choice is generally appropriate and allows the message to be communicated clearly, fitting the band 6 descriptor profile. There are occasional slight inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as 'when they come to age twenty-five or thirty' rather than 'reach the age of', and 'life stage movements' instead of 'life stage transitions'. However, these lexical slips do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation remain accurate throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to form multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'because', 'when', and 'while'. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in expressing straightforward ideas. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, though a few awkward constructions and minor errors persist, such as 'It is really different the way a less experienced person looks at the world', which would be more naturally phrased as 'The way a less experienced person looks at the world is very different.' Overall, grammatical accuracy is solid and communication is never impeded, placing the response comfortably within the band 6.5 to 7 range.
