Student answer (Band 6.0)

As people get older, it is very common for them to change both of their habits and opinions. I completely agree with this statement because people gain new experiences and their priorities change as they become more mature.

One of the significant reason why people change their habits and opinions is that they gain new experiences. This is because individuals have worked in different fields and passed through the several phrases of their life. Although some habits was formed during childhood, these can be influenced by different culture and society. For example, a young man who has never travelled abroad has very limited knowledge about the other society, their views can become open minded after visiting different countries. As a result, people opinions can change after gaining the experiences over the time.

Another reason to change their priorities due to they get older. When people are young, they spend most of their time to socialising, playing games and hangout with their friends. However, when they become older, they may focus on their carrers and family instead of just enjoying their life. For example, a young person may be more addicted to unhealthier food, might to change their priorities after knowing the drawbacks of unhealthy food and focus on healthy lifestyle. Not only these changes improve their physical well being, but they can also help them to maintain healthy lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that people change both habits and opinions as they get older, supporting this view with relevant ideas such as gaining new experiences and shifting priorities. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed and lack extended specific personal examples. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the essay is 229 words long, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length impacts the overall development of the task and prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Despite these shortcomings, the core position is maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'One of the significant reason' and 'Another reason', although some referencing and mechanical cohesion are faulty. For example, 'due to they get older' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the logical flow of the sentence. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but transitions between sentences can sometimes feel forced or repetitive, keeping the cohesion at a competent level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'open minded', 'priorities', and 'physical well being'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'significant reason' (should be plural 'reasons'), 'phrases' instead of 'phases', and 'unhealthier food'. Additionally, spelling and morphological inaccuracies are present, such as 'carrers' and 'socialising'. These lexical errors do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination with words like 'Although' and 'when'. However, frequent grammatical and structural errors are evident. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('some habits was formed'), missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing such as 'due to they get older' and 'might to change their priorities'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occur with enough frequency to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
