Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear stance agreeing that people change habits and opinions as they age. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as children changing their preferences for toys and teenagers shifting career ambitions after watching television shows. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat basic and tends to over-generalise in places without deeper elaboration. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of exploration corresponds to the Band 6 descriptors, as some ideas are slightly under-developed and lack fully extended arguments. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay from the introduction to the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing different life stages, and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'when they saw toys to their friends' and awkward transitional links. Paragraphing is present and mostly appropriate, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally stumbles due to awkward phrasing and mechanical cohesive devices. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for a Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'forthcoming paragraphs', 'perspective', and 'fully developed'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'earm' instead of 'earn', 'graw up' instead of 'grow up', 'impect' instead of 'impact', and 'exitement proffession'. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, like 'exitement proffession' or 'empty mind'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly, preventing the score from falling lower. These errors place the lexical performance firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'When teenagers watch show related hospitals and doctors they want to be doctors...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and tense consistency, such as 'people habits and their perspectives become change', 'I am strongly agree', and 'every child has empty mind they are learning'. Punctuation is also problematic with spaces preceding commas in several sentences. While complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that occasionally require the reader to re-read passages. This performance aligns with Band 5.0.
