Student answer (Band 6.5)

People normally change their opinions and habits over time. I do agree with this statement because as people grow older their mindset and lifestyle changes to view the world, specially in case of health and finances.

Firstly, younger people involve in physical activities that makes them fit and healthy. But as they grow older they understand different risks of diseases and health problems mostly from their experience and education. For instance, a child is very much attracted to fast food due to his temptations. As he/she grows older he/she might learn how processed fast food affects health and lead to multiple serious illness. Many older people prefer to stay fit by involving into some physical activity and eating balanced diet in their daily life to avoid any long term health issues such as diabeties and blood pressure. They become conscious about food intake and maintain a discipline to live a healthy lifestyle.

Secondly, when people become financially independent their lifestyle changes and their opinions on how to manage their money. For example, when a person starts earning their spendings in initial years would be different from when they grow older. After few years the spending categories change and he/she might initaite savings for their future. In this duration, person might experience ups and downs in their financial management and learn how to manage everthing along with savings in case of emergency. Moreover, people are unaware of getting health and term life insuarance for themself. If any such complicated situation arises and they start to panic, such experiences make them alert on taking precautions rather than cure.

Overall, people get motivated to try different things and experiences change their habits and opinions on such things as they older.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt, taking a definitive stance that people change habits and opinions as they age, and supports this position with relevant examples regarding health and finances. The ideas are extended and supported, fulfilling the Band 7 descriptor for addressing all parts with a clear position throughout. For instance, the discussion on how fast-food temptations in childhood shift toward a preference for balanced diets and physical fitness in later life effectively illustrates the argument. Similarly, the points regarding financial independence and insurance provide logical backing. While there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, the overall development of ideas is well-maintained and directly answers the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, with distinct introduction, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' are used to structure the text effectively, although there is a slight mechanical feel to their implementation at times. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument (health and finances). Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression guides the reader smoothly from the introduction to the final summary, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'financially independent', 'processed fast food', and 'term life insurance'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'involves' instead of 'involve' ('younger people involve in'), 'diabeties' instead of 'diabetes', and 'insuarance' instead of 'insurance'. Despite these errors, the lexical range is sufficient to communicate the ideas clearly, preventing the response from dropping to a lower band. The vocabulary deployed successfully conveys meaning regarding lifestyle, health, and financial management.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'As he/she grows older he/she might learn how processed fast food affects health...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'mindset and lifestyle changes' (subject-verb agreement error with a compound subject), 'younger people involve in' (incorrect voice/transitivity), and 'their opinions on how to manage their money' lacking a main verb in the clause. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but errors in articles, prepositions, and verb forms persist, placing the grammar firmly in the Band 6 category where errors do not impede overall communication.
