IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is common for people to change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I strongly agree with this view because people gain new experiences and their responsibilities also change over time.
One important reason people change their habits is that their responsibilities increase as they become adults. For example, a young person may spend most of their free time going out with friends, playing games or watching movies. However, after getting a job and starting a family, they may have less free time and begin to focus more on work, household duties and their children. As a result, their daily routines can become very different from when they were younger.
People can also change their opinions because they learn from their experiences. As children, people often have simple ideas about certain issues because they have limited knowledge. As they grow older, they meet different people, face problems and learn more about life. For instance, someone who once believed that saving money was unnecessary might change their opinion after experiencing financial difficulties. They may then become more careful with their spending and start saving regularly.
In conclusion, I agree that people commonly change both their habits and opinions as they get older. Changes in responsibilities, experiences and knowledge can naturally influence the way people live and think

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position agreeing with the prompt and supporting it with relevant ideas concerning habits and opinions. The student provides clear examples, such as contrasting a young person's social life with adult family responsibilities, and illustrating how financial difficulties change opinions on saving money. However, there is a penalty to consider regarding the length requirement: the text contains 218 words, which falls short of the 250-word minimum specified for Task 2. Consequently, while the development of ideas is generally good, the under-length nature of the essay caps the task response score at Band 5.5, as the ideas cannot be fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. It is divided into an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs focusing separately on habits and opinions, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to link ideas, as seen with transition markers like 'One important reason', 'However', 'As a result', and 'For instance'. Referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression from general statements to specific personal or hypothetical examples. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'responsibilities', 'daily routines', 'financial difficulties', and 'limited knowledge'. There are also successful attempts at less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'starting a family' and 'saving regularly'. Word choice is generally appropriate and natural, and spelling is accurate throughout the piece. While the vocabulary is not particularly sophisticated or extensive enough to reach a higher band, it is entirely sufficient to communicate the writer's message clearly without any impediment to the reader, comfortably satisfying the criteria for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully utilizes subordinate clauses, such as 'when they were younger', 'because they have limited knowledge', and 'someone who once believed that saving money was unnecessary'. Grammatical control is generally quite good, with a high proportion of error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the text. Minor slips do occur occasionally, but there are no persistent grammatical errors that impede communication. The structural variety and accuracy displayed here place the grammar solidly within the Band 7 range.
