Student answer (Band 6.0)

As people advance in age, they tend to generate new behaviours and beliefs. It is agreed that people change their habits and opinions as they grow older. Different reasons for this change would be emphasized.

Firstly, this can be as a result of exposure. As people adance in age, their thinking patterns also change. The kind of people we communicate with, the environment we find ourselves, the books we read, all contribute to our daily habits which can in turn result to our way of life. One major example of this is the schools we attend. I once had a friend that was a bully in school. She loved to bully a particular student in class, during the period of time we were friends, i started pulling this particular student too. It was easy for me to emulate her character because that was what i was being exposed to. However, that is not the person i am today.

Secondly, age is a major factor. As people advance in age, their ideas also change, the activities they engage in becomes different. As commonly said, a person's brain is not fully developed until age 25. I can also say this for myself. Most of the decisions i made when i was younger cannot be compare to the ones i make now that i am 26 years old. This also affects in the kind of person you marry. Make sure your frontal lobe is fully developed before you get married.

Lastly, the change of opions could be based on lack of strong personally belief. You must be confident in your beliefs to not change what you believe over what you hear.

Our everyday experiences also affect and contribute to how we reason overtime. Hence, changes in beliefs and habits is a very common ocurrance as people grow older.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses the prompt effectively, presenting a clear position that people do indeed change their habits and opinions as they get older. The essay presents several distinct reasons to support this stance, notably exposure and the biological factor of age. For instance, the student notes, 'As people advance in age, their thinking patterns also change,' and supports this with a personal anecdote about school bullying and the development of the frontal lobe by age 25. While some ideas, such as the final brief point regarding 'lack of strong personally belief,' are somewhat under-developed and briefly stated, all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear overarching position throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs signaled by transitional markers ('Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'Lastly'), and a concluding sentence. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and faulty. For example, referencing can be unclear, such as in the sentence 'This also affects in the kind of person you marry,' where the pronoun reference is imprecise. Paragraphing is utilized, though the conclusion is compressed into a single brief sentence alongside the final body point rather than forming a distinct concluding paragraph. Progression is generally apparent, but the logical flow between sentences occasionally stumbles due to abrupt transitions and minor referencing issues.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrasing such as 'frontal lobe,' 'emulate her character,' and 'exposure.' However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'adance in age' (advance), 'result to' instead of 'result in,' and 'opions' (opinions). Furthermore, spelling errors such as 'ocurrance' rather than 'occurrence' appear. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main ideas without overly straining the reader, placing the response solidly in the competent band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure through clauses like 'As people advance in age, their thinking patterns also change.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as lower-case 'i' pronouns ('i started pulling'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the activities they engage in becomes different'), and tense/comparison slips ('cannot be compare'). Punctuation is also sometimes weak, with comma splices present. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band for grammatical accuracy.
