Student answer (Band 6.0)

A common statement is that people change their routines and judgements as they get older. This fact is absolutely correct. I totally agree with this statement as some experiences can change our habits and point of view later in the life. The reason for my agreement along with examples are justified in further paragraphs.

To being with, there are ample of reason to be on the agreeing side. First and foremost, individual are getting wiser as they reach a certain age where they have seen many things and learned a lot from their past experiences. As a result, they change the way they used to think about particular thing. Secondly, individual at a young age might have learned some bad habits but they change in their adulthood. This happens at a young age, mostly in childhood as they are easy to be influenced by someone. For instance, we see many youngsters in college and school smokes cigarettes because they are influenced by their surroundings but when they grow older, they like to live a better life.

Another factor supporting my view is that individuals acquire many responsibilities as they grow older, which brings changes in their daily lives. Youngsters have less responsibilities and they tend to spend more time in gaming, entertainment, socializing with friends and irregular activities. However, after entering adulthood, people are often busy with employment, family and financial stability. They prefer healthier and more disciplined life-style. For example, a single person prefer to eat fast food, playing games and etc.. However, a married person likes to spend time with family, eat home made food.

To conclude, changing habits and opinion is part of a life and it is natural. Past experiences and growing maturity makes significant changes in habits and opinions and encourages to modify past judgements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing how habits and opinions change over time with appropriate supporting reasons. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The student supports the view by mentioning life experience, age-related influences, and growing responsibilities. For instance, the reference to youngsters smoking due to peer pressure versus adults seeking a better lifestyle provides a relevant example. While some ideas like the fast food versus home-cooked food comparison are slightly repetitive, the arguments are sufficiently extended and supported to meet the requirements of Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 given the clear progression of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the discussion on wisdom and peer influence in the second paragraph, and responsibilities in the third. However, cohesive devices are occasionally faulty or awkward, such as the introductory phrase "To being with" instead of "To begin with", and "ample of reason" rather than "ample reasons". Referencing and substitution could also be smoother. Nevertheless, the logical structure is clear enough to ensure the reader can follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "finanical stability", "disciplined life-style", and "past experiences". However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, including "To being with", "individual are getting wiser" (singular/plural mismatch), "smokes cigarettes" (subject-verb agreement), and repetitive phrasing like "a single person prefer... a married person likes". These errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts various complex structures, such as "This happens at a young age, mostly in childhood as they are easy to be influenced by someone." However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ("individual are", "smokes cigarettes"), incorrect article usage, and minor prepositional errors. Although these errors occur with some frequency, the meaning remains clear and they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6 grammar.
