Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowaydays, it is very popular that people change their routine and ways of thinking when they get older. I strongly agree with this statement because aging changes both our physical health and life experience.

On the one hand, physical health and changing priorities lead to significant adjustments in daily habits. When people age, their physical health absolutely increases, forcing them to adapt heathier habits such as exercising regularly or eating clean instead of staying up late or eating fast food. Next, older adults have family and career responsibilities, so they have to switch from active leisure activities like partying or gaming to quiet, structured routines. For example, young people often tend to spend their weekends hanging out with friends until midnight, but when they get older, they prefer spending their time at home or doing outdoor activities with their family.

On the other hand, accumulating life experiences directly impacts how people view the world. First of all, young people often evaluate things throughout wealth, social status or popularity. However, with age and experience, they will realize that peace of mind, health and family relationships are far more valuable. For example, people who have enough experience and skills in companies often solve individual conflict effectively. Second, Older people tend to become more patient and open-minded because they have passed various challenges and failures in life. For instance, many young adults are competitive in workplace arguments, but senior managers tend to be more patient and willing to listen to different points of view.

In conclusion, I totally agree that growing older transforms both human routines and perspectives. This shift is a natural and necessary part of becoming mature and living a balanced life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both habits and opinions and presenting a clear, well-developed position that agrees with the statement. The writer extends ideas with relevant examples, such as contrasting young people spending weekends hanging out with friends until midnight with older adults staying at home or doing family activities. The arguments are logical and well-supported, showing a clear progression of thought regarding physical health, family responsibilities, and changing life perspectives. The student successfully outlines how wealth and social status give way to peace of mind and health, and how senior managers become more patient than competitive young adults. The ideas are cohesive and fully relevant to the task throughout, reflecting solid Band 7 performance under the task achievement descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is properly structured into an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs representing 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'Second', providing a clear structure to the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, keeping ideas separated and focused. While referencing is generally clear, some cohesive transitions feel slightly mechanical, preventing the score from reaching the higher bands where cohesion becomes entirely unobtrusive. Nonetheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'accumulating life experiences', 'open-minded', and 'senior managers'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, most notably in the opening sentence where 'Nowaydays' is misspelled and 'very popular' is used instead of 'very common' or 'commonplace'. Furthermore, the phrase 'physical health absolutely increases' in the second paragraph is semantically imprecise and unnatural. Despite these occasional errors in word choice and spelling, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing subordinate clauses and varied structures such as concessive clauses ('When people age, their physical health...') and conditional/relative constructions. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including minor preposition misuse ('evaluate things throughout wealth' instead of 'throughout' or 'via'), capitalization errors ('Second, Older people'), and occasional awkward phrasing. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the frequent error-free sentences show a decent command of basic and intermediate grammatical structures. The control is generally solid, fitting comfortably within the Band 6 criteria.
