Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is generally believed that it is common for people to change both their habits and opinions as they get older. This essay will give reasons why i agree.
To begin with, people change their habits because of growth. From when a child is born to the point where he begins to interact with his peers, who have lived in different parts of the world, this gives him an opportunity to learn about other cultures which helps to broaden his horizon and also exposes him to habits that could help shape his life. For instance a child who had lived in the suburb and moves to the city gets to know that instead of eating with his hands, cutleries are used.
Furthermore, location could also serve as a reason why people change their habit. This can be seen in the case of a young man who gets a job in the city. When he moves to the city he realizes that people observe basic manners while eating which is seen in the way they eat by closing their mouth when they eat and also not trying to engaging in talking to prevent them from choking.
Another reason why people change opinion is because they are well informed through social media and knowing that whatever decisions carried out could be to their detriment if they don't take precautions from certain unhealthy lifestyle they were used to while growing up, they could die prematurely. This could be seen in the instance of a smoker who now has access to watching tv and has access to knowing that smokers are liable to die young from an advert.
In summary i believe that peoples opinions and habits and opinions are shaped by their upbringing, however access to technology and social media has helped to change how they behave

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position agreeing that people change habits and opinions as they get older. The essay includes relevant ideas and examples, such as a child moving from the suburbs to the city and a smoker changing their opinion due to health warnings seen on television and social media. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive; for example, the second and third paragraphs both discuss changing habits due to moving to the city. Overall, the prompt is adequately addressed with logical reasoning, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In summary'. However, referencing and paragraphing can sometimes be mechanical, and the logical progression occasionally stalls due to overly long, run-on sentences, such as the single-sentence explanation of child growth in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas could be managed more smoothly, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'detriment', 'prematurely', and 'broaden his horizon'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'whatever decisions carried out' instead of 'whatever decisions are carried out', and 'engaging in talking' instead of 'talking'. Spelling is generally acceptable, and while vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, noticeable errors prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun 'I', comma splices, and run-on sentences (e.g., 'From when a child is born... helps to shape his life'). Additionally, relative clauses and prepositional phrases are sometimes tangled or lack necessary auxiliary verbs. These errors require the reader to occasionally reread parts of the text, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category for grammatical accuracy.
