Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that people tend to change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I completely agree with this view because people gain more experience with age and their priorities and responsibilities change over time.

Firstly, people’s habits often change as their lifestyle and responsibilities develop. When people are young, they generally have fewer responsibilities and may spend a considerable amount of time on entertainment, socialising or other leisure activities. However, as they become older, they may have jobs, families and financial responsibilities, which encourage them to adopt healthier and more organised routines. For example, a young person may regularly eat fast food and stay up late, whereas after starting a full-time job or having a family, they may begin exercising regularly, eating healthier food and maintaining a fixed sleeping schedule.

Secondly, growing older can significantly influence people’s opinions and attitudes. With age, individuals are exposed to different experiences, people and situations, which can make them reconsider views that they previously held. For instance, someone may believe that academic qualifications are the most important factor in achieving success when they are young. However, after gaining work experience, they may realise that practical skills, communication and professional relationships are equally important. Therefore, personal experience can gradually change the way people understand important issues.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that people commonly change both their habits and opinions as they grow older. This is mainly because their responsibilities increase and their experiences provide them with new perspectives on life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that habits and opinions change over time, and supports this view logically throughout the essay. The student provides well-developed ideas, such as how evolving responsibilities in adulthood alter daily routines like diet and sleep. Furthermore, the second body paragraph effectively illustrates how increased life experience shifts personal views on academic qualifications versus practical skills. The position is maintained consistently from the introduction to the conclusion, and the arguments are extended with relevant and clear examples. There are no omissions or under-developed main points, aligning well with the standards expected at Band 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the thesis statement in the introduction to distinct, well-supported body paragraphs addressing habits and opinions respectively. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'Firstly,' 'However,' and 'For instance,' ensuring a clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph having a clear central topic. Referencing throughout the essay is precise, and the progression of thought is easy to follow without any disruptive elements, demonstrating strong control over coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for a general writing task. Less common lexical items are used with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'considerable amount of time,' 'financial responsibilities,' and 'professional relationships.' While the vocabulary is effective and communicates the ideas clearly, it occasionally leans towards standard general expressions rather than demonstrating a truly wide or sophisticated range of idiomatic or advanced lexical choices. Spelling and word choice are accurate, with no noticeable errors that impede communication, easily satisfying the criteria for a solid Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as concessive and conditional clauses ('When people are young, they generally have fewer responsibilities...' and '...whereas after starting a full-time job...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and there is good control over grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Minor slips or slightly repetitive structural openings do not detract significantly from the overall high level of accuracy. The control over complex syntax is strong and consistent, easily justifying a Band 7.0 score for this criterion.
