Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that people change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I strongly agree with this view because people's responsibilities, experiences and priorities usually change throughout their lives. In this essay, I will examine the reasons and provide my opinion.

One major reason why people change their habits as they grow older is that their responsibilities increases with their age. Yonger people have fewer responsibilities, whereas adults may have more responsibilities like may have jobs, families and others duties. So they have to organised their daily routine and tasks. For example, Young people may stay up late in the night and eat fast food regularly but after getting full-time jobs, they may sleep earlier and eat more healthier food. Therefore, increasing resposibilities can change their daily lives.

Another important reason is that people may change their opinions and priorities becuase they gain more knowledge and life experience as they grow older. When people experience different situations, they may see things from different perspectives. For Instance, a young person may believe earning high salary is more important part for a successful life. However, after becoming older, they may realise that spending time with family and staying healthy are more crucial than earning more money.

In conclusion, I agree that it is very common for people to change their habits and their opinions as they grow older. This is because increased responsibilities can change their priorities, beliefs and daily routine. These changes are natural part of growing older.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task directly by taking a clear position that habits and opinions do change over time and supporting this with relevant arguments. The writer presents two well-chosen main ideas: changing responsibilities for habits, and gaining life experience for opinions. These ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as young people staying up late versus adults getting full-time jobs, and differing views on salaries versus family time. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7. The ideas are clearly linked to the prompt, and although the response is concise, it thoroughly covers all aspects of the general task prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving to two body paragraphs that explore habits and opinions respectively, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'One major reason', 'Another important reason', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and paragraphing show some minor mechanical tendencies, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the general statement on habits and the specific example contains slight repetition of terms like 'responsibilities increases'. Overall, the logical structure is clear and easy to follow, aligning closely with the Band 6.5 to 7 descriptors; a score of 6.5 accurately reflects the slightly mechanical use of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'responsibilities', 'perspectives', and 'priorities'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'Yonger' instead of 'younger', 'organised' instead of 'organise', 'resposibilities' instead of 'responsibilities', 'becuase' instead of 'because', and 'healthier food' instead of 'healthier diets' or 'healthier eating habits'. Despite these errors, meaning is never impeded, and communication remains clear. The lexical resource demonstrates a mix of common and some less common vocabulary, fitting comfortably within the Band 6 criteria, where vocabulary is adequate for the task despite recurrent spelling and morphological slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'whereas', 'because', and 'although'. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include agreement and tense errors such as 'their responsibilities increases' instead of 'increase', 'Yonger people have' with a spelling error, 'adults may have more responsibilities like may have jobs' which contains redundant auxiliary verbs, and 'more important part for a successful life' missing an article or preposition. Punctuation also suffers from double spacing issues. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. This performance is typical of Band 6, featuring a mix of structures alongside noticeable grammatical flaws.
