It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is common for individuals to change both their lifestyles and perspectives as they get older. I strongly agree with the given notion because people gain more experience throughout their life and their responsibilities and priorities change with growing age.

To commence with, the predominant reason for humanbeing to change habit is increasing responsibility. Youngsters usually spend their leisure time on scrolling social media, awaking till late night and playing with friends. However, after entering to adulthood or start a family, they may have less free time. As a result, they may opt for healthier lifestyle such as doing exercise regularly, preparing meal at home and fix sleep schedule. These changes are generally because of growing responsibility rather than passing of time.

Furthermore, people's opinions also get changed as they get more experience and knowledge. When individuals are young, most of their views are influenced by thier parents, teachers and friends. Once they get older, they may interact with peoples from different background and exposed to new ideas through eduaction, workplace and travel. For example, an individual once believed that working long hours are key to successful career later on find that balancing personal and professional life is equally important.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that peoples habits and thoughts changed when they get older beacuse new life expereinces, responsibilities and knowledge naturally change the individua's behave and think throughout thier life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt, taking a strong and consistent stance in agreement that people change both habits and opinions as they age. The ideas are relevant and supported by logical examples, such as shifts in social habits from youth to adulthood and changes in career perspectives. However, the response falls short of the minimum 250-word requirement, containing only 232 words. This under-length impacts the overall development of ideas, restricting the depth of support provided in the body paragraphs. Consequently, while the task is addressed, the penalty for not meeting the length requirement prevents the score from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure you thoroughly develop examples and monitor your word count closely during the test.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and is logically organised into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as habits in the first body paragraph and opinions in the second. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are utilised effectively to signpost the structure of the argument. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. For instance, the phrase 'humanbeing to change habit' shows awkward internal cohesion. Overall, the logical structure is clear and easy to follow, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or 7, though minor mechanical flaws place it solidly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'predominant', 'responsibilities', and 'perspectives'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the essay, such as 'awaking till late night' instead of 'staying up late', 'start a family' instead of 'starting a family', and 'peoples habits' with a missing apostrophe. Additionally, spelling errors occur, including 'eduaction' and 'expereinces'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision that prevents the score from reaching Band 7. Expanding your range of collocations and proofreading for common spelling mistakes will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'When individuals are young, most of their views are influenced...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('peoples habits and thoughts changed', 'working long hours are key'), missing articles ('key to successful career'), and awkward phrasing ('the individua's behave and think'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and communication is not impeded. The variety of sentence structures coupled with frequent error-free constructions aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptor, where a mix of structures is handled with intermittent accuracy.
