IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often observed that people change their habits and opinions as they grow older. I strongly agree with this view because people gain more experience, face different responsibilities, and are exposed to new situations throughout their lives. These factors naturally influence the way they behave and think.

One important reason people change their habits is that their priorities usually change with age. Young people often have fewer responsibilities and may spend a large amount of time socialising, travelling or enjoying entertainment. However, as they become older, they may have careers, families and financial responsibilities. Consequently, their daily routines can become more organised and practical. For example, a young person may regularly eat fast food and stay awake until late at night, but after starting a full-time job or having children, they may begin cooking at home, exercising and following a more regular sleeping schedule.

People's opinions can also change because they gain knowledge and experience. When someone is young, many of their views are influenced by their parents, teachers, friends or social media. As they become older, however, they meet different kinds of people and experience situations that may challenge their previous beliefs. This can make them reconsider their opinions. For instance, a university student may initially believe that academic qualifications are the only important factor in finding a successful career. After entering the workplace, they may realise that communication skills, practical experience and professional relationships are also extremely valuable.

Another factor is that circumstances can force people to reconsider their attitudes. Someone who once disliked saving money might change their behaviour after experiencing financial difficulties. Similarly, a person who did not value spending time with family may develop a different attitude after becoming a parent or losing someone close to them.

In conclusion, I agree that it is very common for people to change both their habits and opinions as they get older. Changes in responsibilities, personal experiences, knowledge and circumstances all contribute to this process. In my view, changing one's behaviour and ideas is a natural part of growing and learning throughout life.
