Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is a common occurence for people to change their habits and their opinions as they grow older, I agree with this statement because change is an essential part of life and people always thrive to become better versions of themselves.
The only constant thing in life is change, just as the saying goes, and with change comes growth. When people have the opportunity to experience a different aspect of life which may be due to a change in environment or location, their opinions tend to shift from what they have known to be normal to something new. For example, if a child grows up in an environment or home where being drunk all through the day is the norm, the child can make the decision not to become a drunkard, having seen the disadvantages of continuous drinking habits. And if he or she is opportuned to leave that environment to a more stable one, this can aid the their decision for a change.
In addition, overtime, I have seen people make concious efforts to become better versions of themselves. So many drug addicts has personally check themselves into rehabilitation centres and got clean, some even become preachers of the gospel. There are also cases of hardened criminals taking new paths while in prison, they take up new hobbies, habits, learn a skill or become educated while in jail. They all come out of prison, become good citizens and never go back to the life of crime.
In conclusion, I agree with the opinion that it is possible for people to change their habits and opinions as they grow older, reason being that, change is a very significant aspect of life and and it has been proven that people take delibrate actions to become better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt directly by agreeing with the statement and providing reasons and examples regarding how habits and opinions change over time. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The student supports their ideas with examples, such as a child leaving a difficult environment or individuals overcoming drug addiction and criminality in prison. However, some of the ideas are slightly generalized or lack deeper extension, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0 or 6.5. Because the ideas are relevant, well-selected, and cover the main prompt adequately, it satisfies the criteria for Band 6.5 by presenting a clear overall position and developing main ideas, although further depth would be required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as environmental influences versus personal choices like rehabilitation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition' and 'In conclusion', although some referencing is slightly faulty, such as 'aid the their decision'. Overall, the logical progression is generally clear, and ideas flow reasonably well from one sentence to the next. This aligns well with the requirements for Band 6.0, where information and ideas are coherently arranged, even if some cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'rehabilitation centres', 'hardened criminals', and 'essential part of life'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'occurence' instead of 'occurrence', 'thrive' instead of 'strive', 'overtime' instead of 'over time', 'concious' instead of 'conscious', and 'delibrate' instead of 'deliberate'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly, fitting the Band 6 descriptor where an adequate range is shown alongside some spelling and word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and conditional-style examples ('if a child grows up...'). There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including comma splices in the introduction and first body paragraph ('as they grow older, I agree...'), as well as minor syntactic errors such as 'if he or she is opportuned to leave' and 'the their decision'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and communication is maintained. This profile matches Band 6.0, which features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures alongside recurring grammatical errors that do not impede communication.
