Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The student attempts to address the prompt regarding whether people change habits and opinions as they get older, presenting a clear initial agreement. However, the response is severely underdeveloped, reaching only 142 words, which falls well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the development of ideas is heavily curtailed, with only a brief personal example provided about spending money at age 18 versus 21. While the writer touches on the core theme of maturation and changing habits, the lack of sufficient extension and the failure to meet the minimum length requirement restricts the task achievement score to a Band 4.0. To improve, the student must ensure they write at least 250 words and fully elaborate on multiple distinct reasons with supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays basic structural organization, attempting an introduction and body paragraphs with transitional markers such as "to begin with" and "moreover." However, paragraphing is irregular and incomplete, particularly near the end of the text. Cohesive devices are often used mechanically or inaccurately, and the logical progression of ideas is hindered by broken syntax and run-on sentences, such as in "now things are different because now Age is 21 now I'm spending money..." Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of communication. Overall, the arrangement shows some fundamental organization but lacks clear overall progression, aligning best with a Band 5.0 descriptor. The student needs to focus on logical paragraph structuring and accurate cohesive referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying on simple terms like "money," "things," "games," and "habit." There are noticeable lexical inadequacies and word choice errors, such as "usual things" instead of "trivial things" and "do good thing." The range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying very simple meaning, but frequent lexical limitations and awkward phrasing cause some difficulty for the reader. The student attempts a few descriptive words like "responsible" and "mature," but control is lacking. This performance fits the Band 5.0 descriptors. To progress, the writer should expand their vocabulary range and practice appropriate collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences strung together with conjunctions or comma splices, as seen in "now I will give you my personal example when I was at the age of 18 I'm used to spend a lot of money..." There are frequent grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies ("I'm used to spend" instead of "I used to spend"), missing punctuation, capitalization errors, and fragments. These errors often distort meaning and place a heavy burden on the reader. Because the control of grammar is weak and complex structures are frequently faulty, this response is awarded a Band 4.0. The student must work heavily on basic sentence boundaries, verb tense consistency, and accurate punctuation.
