Student answer (Band 6.0)

With age it is very common for people to evolve their habits and opinions. I agree with this statement, as people grow older they have different opinions and habits to those which they had in their young age. It is because as people grow older their perspective towards live change complete.

I believe that people have different perspectives at different stages of their life. As people grow their observation to their surroundings evolve. They observe life with maturity, which develop different opinions to their mindset. With these observations they try to incur new habits. For an example, a child's habit can be to throw things off the table. But when that child grows he observes that throwing things can break them and thus he develops a new habit to not throw things off the table.

I also believe when people get married their habits and opinions change a lot. When people grow they live with their patner majority of their lives which can influence new habits. When married couples live together, they dicuss many general ideas and issues about society, these dicussions can change their previously formed opinions. Even the smallest habits like sleep-cycle and breakfast time change when you grow older and get married.

Thus I think that mature observations and living with your patner can change many habits and opinions over time. As people get older they make conversations with many other people in the society. They inherit some good and bad qualities which shape their opinions and habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by agreeing that people change their habits and opinions as they age, presenting a clear position throughout. Main ideas are introduced, such as shifting perspectives over time and the influence of marriage, and they are supported with explanations and examples, like the growing child or changing daily routines. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat generalised and repetitive, particularly in the conclusion where points are reiterated rather than extended. The explanation relies on simple everyday observations rather than deeper exploration, which places the response comfortably at Band 6. To reach a higher band, the student should develop their arguments with more depth and provide more sophisticated or nuanced examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is generally coherent with a clear overall progression. The student uses basic cohesive devices to connect ideas, such as 'I believe that', 'For an example', and 'Thus I think'. Paragraphing is used logically to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on different life stages, and a conclusion. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally weak, such as using 'These dicussions can change' where the antecedent is slightly loose. Furthermore, there are minor linking errors between sentences that prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score. Overall arrangement is logical, ensuring the reader can follow the main train of thought without difficulty, matching the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas about ageing, habits, and opinions clearly. There are attempts to use less common items and collocations, such as 'perspective towards live', 'observation to their surroundings', and 'sleep-cycle'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('live' instead of 'life', 'patner' instead of 'partner', 'dicuss' instead of 'discuss') and some awkward word choices ('incur new habits' instead of 'form new habits'). While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from moving into Band 7. The lexical range is sufficient for the basic demands of the prompt, earning a Band 6 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student attempts complex structures using dependent clauses, such as 'as people grow older they have different opinions' and 'when married couples live together'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues ('perspective... change complete' instead of 'changes completely') and missing articles ('a child's habit can be to throw things off table'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar is characteristic of Band 5, as attempts at complex sentences frequently contain minor errors, though the overall communicative success pushes the profile closer to a solid Band 5.5, rounded to a Band 5.0 due to the accumulation of slips.
