Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older. I agree with this statement because people gain more experience and their responsibilities and priorities change throughout life.
Firstly, people often change their habits because their lifestyle becomes different as they grow older. For example, young people may spend a lot of time playing games, using social media or going out with friends. However, when they become adults, they may have jobs, families and other responsibilities. As a result, they usually develop more practical habits, such as waking up early, managing their money and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, age and responsibilities can have a strong influence on people's daily routines.
Secondly, people's opinions can also change because they gain new experiences and knowledge. A person may have a particular opinion about education, work or relationships when they are young, but their views can become different after experiencing real-life situations. For instance, a young person may believe that earning a high salary is the most important part of having a successful career. However, after gaining work experience, they may realise that job satisfaction, a healthy work-life balance and opportunities for personal development are also important.
In addition, meeting different people and learning about different cultures can also influence someone's opinions. As people become more mature, they may become more open-minded and understand that there can be several ways of looking at the same issue.
In conclusion, I agree that people commonly change their habits and opinions as they get older. This happens mainly because they gain experience, face new responsibilities and develop a better understanding of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses all parts of the task by taking a firm stance and exploring both habits and opinions in relation to growing older. The position is well-maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well developed and extended with relevant examples, such as comparing the priorities of young people playing games to adults managing jobs and families, as well as shifts in career views regarding salary versus work-life balance. The arguments are logical and directly answer the prompt. There are no omissions or under-developed main points. This performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with habits, moving to opinions, and introducing additional cultural and social influences. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'As a result', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text, although they are at times slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the response is easy to follow. Referencing is clear and effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items and collocations such as 'practical habits', 'real-life situations', 'job satisfaction', and 'open-minded'. Word choice is generally appropriate and precision is maintained throughout most of the text. Spelling and word formation are accurate. While the vocabulary is not exceptionally wide or sophisticated enough to reach Band 8, it easily meets the criteria for Band 7 by demonstrating flexibility and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'As people become more mature, they may become more open-minded and understand that there can be several ways...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong. Minor slips do occur, but they are rare and never impede communication or strain the reader. The grammatical control displayed is consistent with a Band 7 performance.
