Student answer (Band 6.0)

A highly controversial topic these days that whether older adults can change their habit and opinions or it is easier for youngers. In this essay I am going to examine this question from both points of view and explain why I believe that, it is not easy for older adults to change their habits and opinions.

There are people who argued that the benefit of flexible personality considerably outweigh its flaws. The main reason of believing that is many people live with their families, children and grandchildren these days. It is possible to say that, living in joint family system makes them dependent on others, so that older people tends to change their habits and opinions. A good example of this is my grandmother lives with us in our home. She owns a generous and kind personality, she does not argue or take part in opinions just because she does not want to hurt our sentiments.

On the other hand, some people argued that it is difficult for older people to change their habits and opinions with passage of time. It is commonly believe that older people have lived a part of life. They have some good and bad experiences that become habits lately while their memories have make them to stuck on their opinions. It has proven by research, that our brain has a power of adaptibility and change to learn new skills. This is called a neuroplasticity. Although, neuroplasticity is a pathway to adapt habits but it is also stated that young ones can easily learn new patterns, languages and skills rather than older people. For Instance, it is hard to make older people learn new gadgets, change the settings of bed room once you distrupt their table's arrangement they become angry. Because there brain does not accept any change in activities of daily livings.

In conclusion, I would like to disagree with the statement that says it is very common for people to change habit and opinion when they grows older. I would rather say it is difficult for them to settle down in new environment, learning new language or room furniture arrangements. They get aggitated on change in daily routine pattern that supports my statement of disagreement with, it is easy for older adults to change their habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear, consistent position throughout by arguing that it is difficult for older adults to change their habits and opinions. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the discussion around neuroplasticity and daily routines, but some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the paragraph exploring the joint family system introduces an interesting angle about the grandmother, but it remains somewhat limited and under-developed compared to the stronger arguments in the subsequent body paragraph. To reach a higher level, all supporting points would need equally thorough elaboration and extension, ensuring every example directly and deeply reinforces the central thesis without trailing off into anecdotal generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, featuring an introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion', but the referencing and logical flow are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the transition between sentences in the second body paragraph can feel abrupt, and referencing pronouns like 'they' and 'their' occasionally creates mild ambiguity regarding whether the writer is referring to young people or older adults. To achieve a higher standard, cohesion needs to be managed more fluidly and naturally, ensuring that every sentence builds smoothly upon the last without relying on repetitive transitional patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'neuroplasticity', 'adaptability', and 'aggitated'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling that surface throughout the essay, including phrases like 'owns a generous and kind personality', 'power of adaptibility', and spelling errors such as 'distrupt' and 'aggitated'. These lexical slips do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument, but they prevent the writing from achieving greater precision and stylistic flair. Incorporating a wider selection of natural collocations and ensuring greater spelling accuracy would elevate this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the characteristic profile of this level. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'older people tends to change', article omissions such as 'in part of life', and awkward prepositional or clausal patterns like 'disagree with, it is easy for older adults'. Additionally, punctuation errors and run-on constructions appear in several places, such as 'In this essay I am going to examine this question from both points of view and explain why I believe that, it is not easy...'. To improve, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over complex grammatical patterns.
