Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is very common for individuals to change their opinions and habits when they become older. I agree with this statement because they have an experience in several aspects of life and there are certain factors which they adopt with their age.
The main reason is that older people have a greater exposure with other human beings. This is because they gain certain habits from them and implement it in their lives. Furthermore, they focus on everything and learn from their mistakes so their opinions become mature with the time. For example, in most of the families the opinion of older people matters because they have a strong decision making skills.
Other reason is that, it is in human nature to adapt certain behaviours according to their age. Their age demands certain changes from them so they become more careful and responsible for their opinions. Moreover, their daily habits and routine has a directly impact on their health. Therefore, they change their habits and opinions when they become older. For instance, the study concluded that those older people who have a healthy lifestyle had a disciplined life and they adapted several changes with their age.
In conclusion, it is very common among individuals to change their habits and opinions as they get older. I strongly agree with this because they learn from their life and with the time going they develop a skills to change their habits and make opinions which are good for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that people change their habits and opinions as they age, supporting it with reasons such as experience, human nature, and lifestyle impacts. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on general assertions rather than fully extended examples. For instance, the mention of family opinions or a concluding study lacks specific context to flesh out the argument. Furthermore, the response falls slightly short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, coming in at 244 words. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand on their supporting examples with greater depth and ensure the word count requirement is fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear position stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different supporting points, and basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel somewhat mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'Other reason is that' lacking an article. To move into higher bands, the writer should demonstrate more flexible and sophisticated use of cohesive devices, ensuring smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'exposure', 'discipline', and 'responsible'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that reflect a limited resource, such as 'greater exposure with other human beings' instead of 'to', 'decision making skills' where plurality or hyphenation is slightly off, and 'with the time going' instead of 'as time goes on'. Spelling is generally accurate, but word choice inaccuracies occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on natural phrasing and precise word choices, particularly regarding prepositions tied to specific verbs and nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and causal clauses like 'those older people who have a healthy lifestyle had a disciplined life'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, including missing or incorrect articles ('an experience', 'the study concluded', 'a skills'), plural agreement issues ('a strong decision making skills'), and awkward prepositional usage. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning completely. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase control over complex sentence structures and eliminate recurring basic grammatical errors.
