Student answer (Band 6.0)

Personality is an ever changing attribute of a person. A young mind has a happier, more positive approach to view life as they are nurtured in a protected environment. As individuals mature with age, everything about them changes, not only in appearance but also in terms of wisdom and the way of observing things. New perspectives helps us to see the world in a logical and realistic manner. In my opinion, it is true that humans have a tendency to change their nature as they grow older.

My sibling is younger than me and our opinions and habits vary vastly. Since he is just a teenager, his problems are very limited. For instance, getting good grades and playing football. This might seem petty to me, but for him this is a big deal. Whereas an adult, I face different set of issues. Finding a source of livelihood, paying rent, carrying out all other expenses. These issues may vary from person to person. When we are younger, everything seems simpler as our parents look after us and make sure we receive the best of all facilities. As an adult my viewpoint has completely changed and I wonder how did they manage to make it seem so effortless.

It is important to acknowledge that Adulthood comes with a set of unsaid responsibilities for which we adapt and change our habits and opinions about life. It is the need of the hour to evolve and understand the essence of changes in one's attitude and lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that people tend to change their habits and opinions as they get older, supporting this with a relevant personal comparison between the writer and a younger sibling. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the contrast in daily concerns between a teenager and an adult is nicely detailed, the broader reflection on how opinions change remains somewhat general and relies on simple assertions. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop all parts of the argument with deeper analysis or additional extended examples regarding how opinions specifically shift over time, rather than focusing predominantly on lifestyle responsibilities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from a general statement on personality to a specific family comparison, and finally to a concluding thought on adult responsibilities. Cohesion within and between sentences is generally adequate, though referencing and transitional devices can occasionally feel mechanical or abrupt, such as the sudden shift into the sibling example without a stronger transitional phrase. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the text. To achieve a higher level, the essay would benefit from more flexible and seamless cohesive devices, ensuring that the progression between ideas flows naturally without any abrupt shifts in focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's meaning. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'ever changing attribute', 'nurtured in a protected environment', and 'essence of changes', which show a reasonable range. However, there are some minor word-choice and collocation errors that surface, such as saying 'New perspectives helps' where subject-verb agreement is affected, and awkward phrasing like 'face different set of issues'. These occasional inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of precision and stylistic sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well, as seen in 'As individuals mature with age, everything about them changes'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'New perspectives helps', missing articles such as 'Whereas an adult', and minor punctuation flaws. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. To advance further, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and finer control over articles and prepositions.
