Student answer (Band 7.5)
People often experience significant changes in their lifestyles and the way of thinking as they grow older. I agree that changing habits and opinions is a common part of ageing, mainly because of they gain experience and their priorities tend to change overtime.
One of the main reason why people's habits change is that their responsibilities usually increases as they become older. Young people on the other side have plenty of time to socialize, sleep late or plan outings. Adults have the careers, families and financial responsibilities to consider. Consequently, they adopt healthier and more organized lifestyles. For example, a person in their twenties was addicted to fast food but choosing to prepare a healthier meal after developing a family. In addition, ageing can make people more concerned about consequences of unhealthy habits, encouraging them to exercise regularly or reduce activities that could affect their wellbeing.
People's opinion also changes as a result of their experiences. When individuals are young their views are often influenced by their friends or teachers. However, as they encounter different situations or people, they may begin to question their beliefs that they previously thought were accepted. For an instance, someone who never travelled abroad might have negative assumptions about another culture. However, after living or working in a foreign country, they may develop an open minded attitude because of their personal experiences. This demonstrates how direct experience may gradually change peoples perspectives.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that people commonly change both their habits as well as opinions as they get older. Increased responsibilities can influence their lifestyle, while new experiences and greater maturity can cause them to reconsider their existing beliefs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position throughout that people change both habits and opinions as they age. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as how increased responsibilities alter lifestyles and how travel changes cultural perceptions. The reasoning is sound, though there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise certain life transitions, which is characteristic of this level. To reach the highest bands, the ideas could be even more fully developed with deeper analysis, but the current level of extension clearly satisfies the requirements of a well-developed argument with a consistent and supported stance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that states the position, moving to body paragraphs focusing on habits and opinions respectively, and concluding with a summary of the main points. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, including transition phrases like 'Consequently', 'In addition', and 'However'. Paragraphing is managed effectively, and referencing is mostly clear. To achieve an even higher level, cohesion could be made completely unobtrusive, but the current structure guides the reader smoothly and logically through the writer's arguments without confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient vocabulary range to allow for some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'responsibilities', 'priorities', 'socialize', and 'perspectives'. There is a commendable awareness of style and collocation, particularly in phrases like 'concerning about consequences' and 'open minded attitude'. Occasional inaccuracies in word choice and word form occur, such as writing 'the way of thinking' instead of 'ways of thinking', and minor grammatical-lexical slips like 'for an instance' instead of 'for instance'. However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communicates the ideas clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures alongside frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating good overall control of grammar and punctuation. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses and conditional concepts, as seen in sentences like 'However, as they encounter different situations or people, they may begin to question their beliefs...' Minor errors persist, such as article omissions and prepositions like 'because of they gain experience' instead of 'because they gain experience', as well as subject-verb agreement slips like 'One of the main reason'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively rare and do not impede communication, allowing the complex ideas to be expressed accurately.
