Student answer (Band 7.5)

People frequently change their daily habits and personal opinions as they grow older. I completely agree with this statement. As time pases, new life experiences, maturity, and physical changes naturally force all of us to adjust how we think and how we live our everyday lives.

First, our opinions alter because we gain valuable wisdom over time. Young people often hold simple, idealistic views about the world due to limitd experiences. However, as they get older, they face real-world challenges like building a career, paying bills, and managing complex relationships. These situations teach them too see things from more realistic perspectives. For example, a university student might believe that making money is the only key to happiness. Later in life, their opinion often changes completely, and they begin to value mental health and free time spent with family much more.

Second, our routines change because of health need and new responsibilties. In their youth, people often stay up late or eat unhealthy fast food. As the body ages, it becomes weaker, forcing individuals to develop better habits like exercising regularly and sleeping well.

Furthermore, life stages demand new behaviors. Starting a full-time job or raising children leaves no room for lazy routines. People must become disciplined and organized to manage their time efficientlly, which completely reshapes their old ways of living.

In conclusion, changing our habits and mindsets is an entirely normal part of growing up. Evolving experiences make us much wiser, while changing bodies and new social roles force us to adapt our daily schedules. Therefore, these changes are necessary for personal growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout in full agreement with the statement. The writer extends and supports their ideas well, examining both opinions and habits with relevant examples, such as how career pressures alter monetary views or how aging changes dietary routines. While there is a slight tendency to over-generalize in places, the ideas are sufficiently elaborated to meet the threshold of the given band. To push further into higher bands, the arguments could benefit from even greater depth and nuance in the supporting examples rather than relying on relatively standard illustrations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay presents a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The writer effectively divides the response into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs handling opinions and habits separately, and a strong concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Second', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used flexibly to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the logical flow is maintained from start to finish. To achieve an even higher level, the writer could incorporate more sophisticated, less mechanical referencing and subtler cohesive transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range that allows for some flexibility and precision, such as 'idealistic views', 'complex relationships', and 'personal growth'. The writer attempts less common lexical items with a general awareness of style and collocation. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, specifically typos like 'pases', 'limitd', and 'efficientlly', alongside slightly awkward phrasing such as 'health need'. These occasional lexical slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them requires tighter control over spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response displays a good variety of complex structures alongside frequent error-free sentences, showing solid control of grammar and punctuation. The writer successfully employs subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and conditional-like contexts to build complex sentence forms. A few minor errors persist, such as missing articles or slightly awkward prepositional patterns like 'too see' instead of 'to see', but these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. To reach the next level, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider range of more ambitious sentence structures with an even higher proportion of error-free output.
