Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by expressing a clear position of complete agreement regarding how people's habits and opinions alter as they age. Relevant ideas are presented, such as shifts in career priorities and health awareness, showing that the writer has fulfilled the core prompt requirements. However, the development is uneven. While the discussion on career satisfaction provides a relevant example, parts of the explanation feel repetitive and slightly under-developed. For instance, the transition into health habits in the third paragraph introduces valid points about sleep and fast food, but the reasoning tends to generalise without sufficient depth or extension. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully expanded with greater elaboration and sharper supporting examples throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated in the introduction and a logical division into paragraphs, separating career views from lifestyle habits. The progression of ideas is generally understandable, moving from general agreement to specific domains like work and health. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical and occasionally faulty due to structural issues. For example, transitional phrases are either missing or awkwardly constructed, such as starting paragraphs with phrases like 'to begain with' and 'now if i talk about habits'. Referencing and logical connectors between sentences could be managed more smoothly. To achieve a stronger band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that paragraph transitions flow more naturally without relying on formulaic or abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate basic ideas about growing older, such as 'life experiences', 'career', and 'health awareness'. However, the vocabulary is limited and accompanied by noticeable spelling, word-choice, and word-form errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous spelling slips throughout the text, including 'prespectives', 'paragaphs', 'begain', 'salery', 'relise', 'puntuate', 'specifice', 'focuse', 'excercise', 'patiance', and 'medicien'. Additionally, word choices and collocations are often imprecise or awkward, such as 'getting life experiences', 'broden people's thinking', and 'signal health regarding'. To improve in this criterion, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling accuracy, and use words and collocations more naturally and precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are recurrent grammatical errors relating to verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of these errors include 'when they getting older' instead of 'when they get older', 'they are have not interested' instead of 'they are not interested', 'as people older' instead of 'as people get older', and 'in the young age' instead of 'at a young age' or 'in youth'. Punctuation is also problematic, marked by run-on structures and missing terminal punctuation. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures with improved accuracy, ensuring that basic agreements and verb tense consistency are maintained throughout the response.
