Student answer (Band 6.0)

Habits and Opinions are not genetical and hence have the potential to change as people grow older.

Habit is what you learn and endulge in your own lifestyle. People have many habits which turn out to be in their favour and many which they gradually would may need to change as per their lifestyle. Change of habits may have many factors aligned to it, which could also be social norms, change in your environment, peers and sometimes also health.

For instance, a child may have the tendency to suck his/her thumb but as an adult that habit may gradually change due to the social settings. Another exmaple could also be a person who was not disciplined about gym, now goes to the gym or works out every day as he his doctors have suggested.

Opinions could also be related to articilating your own thoughts and what a person thinks. Development of the brain is one of the factors which could cause the change of opinions. Another factor could also be experience, with time and with experience a person understands and learns to accept and reframe their thoughts in a particular situation.

For instance, A person with have a opinion on politics not supporting the ruling party today but the case could be very different if there has been a change in their Habit or actions.

I personally feel Habits and Opinions are quite co- related to each other and can have impact on each other. Habits and opinions could be chnaged for either good or could also have their own drawbacks.

To conclude, its an individuals choice to change their own HABITS and OPINIONS.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both habits and opinions, presenting a clear position that they change over time due to various factors. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the discussion on habits includes relevant examples like thumb-sucking and gym discipline, the ideas regarding opinions are somewhat limited and under-developed, particularly the brief mention of brain development and political views which lacks deep exploration. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support all main points with more thorough explanations and fully realized examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated early and reiterated in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized to separate distinct concepts, such as habits and opinions, which aids readability. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, relying on basic transitions like 'For instance' and 'Another factor' without demonstrating more sophisticated linking. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in the political example. To progress further, the writer should integrate more varied cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between ideas to maintain a stronger logical flow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'genetical', 'articilating', and 'co-related'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, including 'genetical' instead of 'genetic', 'endulge' instead of 'indulge', 'articilating' instead of 'articulating', and 'exmaple'. Despite these errors, meaning is generally not impeded. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary range needs to be expanded with more precise collocations, and greater accuracy in word forms and spelling must be demonstrated consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at structures like conditional or causal clauses. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and phrasing issues like 'A person with have a opinion', capitalization inconsistencies in 'HABITS and OPINIONS', and minor subject-verb agreement slips. These errors rarely impede communication and remain manageable for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over basic grammatical patterns and punctuation.
