Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very usual for individuals to alter their practices, as well as their perspective as they age. In this essay I will argue in favor of this statement. People not only gain experience as time passes, they also go through physical changes, all of which adds up to their change in stance and traits overtime.

Time makes one witness incredible amount of moments and incidents in life, some leaving a positive impact, other negative. Each one of these either make you extremely humble towards life, or on the contrary; resentful, changing your viewpoint along. For instance, someone who was always pessimistic, lost his high figure employment and it eventually provided him an opportunity to establish his own business, which turned out to be an ultimate success, had his experience wire his thought process differently.

With advancing years, maturing physically and mentally modifies people a great deal. Once a very stubborn figure could transforms into a polite and down-to-earth person as years pass. Frailty of their body and decline in strength, makes them very different. Like, we see a major shift in the habits and opinions of our own parents when they become grandparents. They are more lenient and fragile towards their grandchildren.

To sum it up, it is not a known fact that is to happen with each and every individual, but it is what is generally observed. Mistakes, life experiences, downfalls, and triumphs, all shape you in one way or the other down the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that people change with age, and you give relevant reasons involving life experience and physical and mental development. The examples of a person becoming successful after losing a job and parents becoming more lenient as grandparents help illustrate your points. However, the first example is difficult to follow and its connection to changing habits is less explicit; the second mainly describes a change in attitude. The conclusion also introduces a qualification—that change does not happen to everyone—without explaining how this affects your overall view. The response is 247 words, three words below the required minimum. To strengthen the response, develop each example more clearly and address both habits and opinions consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting different reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from life experiences to ageing and physical change is logical, and signposts such as “For instance” and “To sum it up” help readers follow the argument. Some connections, however, are not fully smooth. The first example is packed into a long sentence, making the sequence of events and its relevance harder to track. In the second body paragraph, the move from physical frailty to grandparents’ leniency could be explained more explicitly. The conclusion repeats the general point rather than drawing together the two reasons. Clearer links between claims and examples, with less mechanical signposting, would make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary and attempt some less common expressions, including “pessimistic,” “resentful,” “frailty,” and “down-to-earth.” These choices help convey the topic, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some phrasing is inaccurate or unnatural, though: “high figure employment,” “ultimate success,” and “wire his thought process differently” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Practices” is also less precise than “habits” in this context, while “traits” shifts the focus from habits and opinions. There are a few word-form or spelling issues, such as “overtime” where “over time” is intended. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than choosing expressions mainly for complexity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional-style example and clauses beginning with “as” and “when.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “all of which adds up” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “could transforms” uses the wrong verb form. In “Frailty of their body and decline in strength, makes them very different,” the subject–verb agreement and sentence construction need attention. The long sentence beginning “For instance, someone who was always pessimistic” also makes the grammatical relationships difficult to manage. Review agreement, verb forms after modal verbs, and sentence boundaries; shorter, controlled versions of complex sentences would improve clarity while preserving variety.
