IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Habits and opinions play a vital role in a human life that keeps changing quite often as we get older. I agree mainly because of 2 reasons.
Firstly, I believe that habits are like regular day to day activities that people include in their routine and opinions are dependent on their thinking.
For example some drinks luke warm water with a a honey and lemon every day as they think is quite healthy and refreshing which motivates them to work without any hurry in the mornings.
But later at some age again this view point changes as they become older due to situations like experiences they have gone through.
On the other hand, the as age increases people feel that some routine habits to be changed as they feel bored and want something new to start.
For example doing yoga will help increase concentration and relaxes the brain after certain point they feel it was quite sleepy to practice this daily as their opinion varies due to laziness.
In addition there is also something we notice in our children also they seem quite motivated to go to school regularly 9 to 5 as they think they can spend whole day with friends and then again their viewpoint changes if something odd happens at school and does not wants to step into school again.
Finally everyone has certain things and situations that will comeacross them which will result in changing of their opinions and habits as they become older and it is quite natural adaption we see in our human life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear in the opening—“I agree”—and the response stays focused on how habits and opinions may change with age. You offer relevant examples involving morning routines, yoga and children’s attitudes to school. However, the reasons are not consistently developed: the first example explains a routine but does not clearly show how age changes it, while the yoga example shifts from age to boredom and laziness without explaining the connection. The school example is relevant but describes a change after an unusual event rather than specifically as people get older. To strengthen the response, explain the age-related cause in each example and show how it leads to a changed habit or opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, several body paragraphs and a concluding statement, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “Finally” help indicate stages of the discussion. However, the overall progression is not always clear: the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” does not present a contrasting view, and the paragraph about children introduces a new example without linking it clearly to the preceding point. Some connections within examples are also difficult to follow, particularly the shift from practising yoga to feeling sleepy and becoming lazy. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main reason, then connect the example explicitly to the claim about ageing. This would make the organisation more logical and reduce reliance on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “routine,” “viewpoint,” “experiences,” “concentration” and “motivated.” These choices help communicate the general subject, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning harder to follow. For example, “a human life that keeps changing quite often” and “a natural adaption we see in our human life” are awkward expressions; “comeacross” is also incorrectly written as one word. There is repetition of “changes,” “feel” and “quite.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary the language used to describe change, such as “revise a routine” or “reconsider a belief,” while checking spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “as,” “which” and “if.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to read. Examples include “some drinks … as they think is quite healthy,” where the clause lacks a clear subject, and “does not wants to step into school,” where the verb form is incorrect. There are also problems with articles and agreement in “a a honey and lemon” and “yoga will help increase concentration and relaxes the brain.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation need attention, too. Practise building one clear main clause before adding subordinate clauses, and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms.
