Student answer (Band 4.5)

It is believed that people change as they advance in life, both their habits and their ideaology. I agree to this as well that as people evolve and gain more life experience they adapt with time and their patterns and preferences are bound to transform as well.

On the one hand, change is a cruicial part of life and I agree. Our experiences and the events we go through in the duration of our life shape us as individuals. For example, becoming a mother was a life changing experience for me. I was 24 years old, a fresh graduate, when I became a mother. I no longer look at the world the same carefree way as I did when I wasn't a parent. I have

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear general position in the introduction: “I agree” that people change as they get older, and the example of becoming a mother is relevant to changing outlook and habits. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: the example is left unfinished at “I have,” the second body paragraph contains only “On the other hand,” and the conclusion gives no supporting explanation. The reasons and examples are therefore very limited and under-developed, and the discussion does not fully explain how both habits and opinions change. The response is also 112 words below the required minimum. To strengthen it, complete the personal example, explain a second reason, and support the conclusion with a clear summary of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

The response has a recognisable basic structure: an introduction, a body paragraph introduced by “On the one hand,” an attempted contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. The example about becoming a mother also follows logically from the point about life experiences shaping people. However, progression breaks down because the first body paragraph ends mid-sentence, the next paragraph contains only “On the other hand,” and the conclusion is too brief to bring the ideas together. The linking phrases suggest a two-sided discussion, but the response does not develop that structure. Use complete paragraphs with one clear point each, connect each point to an explanation or example, and ensure that the conclusion follows from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary to discuss personal development, including “life experience,” “preferences,” “shape us as individuals,” and “life changing experience.” These phrases show an attempt to express ideas beyond very basic vocabulary. However, the range is limited by the short, incomplete response, and some word choices or spelling errors reduce accuracy: “ideaology” is misspelled, and “cruicial” should be “crucial.” “Change” and related ideas are repeated without much variation. Aim to use precise terms for the changes you describe, such as shifts in priorities, routines, or outlook, and check spelling and natural word combinations when proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “Our experiences and the events we go through in the duration of our life shape us as individuals” uses a relative clause, while the opening sentence combines two related ideas. However, the range is limited, and errors or incomplete structures affect clarity. “I agree to this as well that” is not a well-formed construction; use “I agree that” or “I also believe that.” The sentence ending “I have” is incomplete, and “change can be beautiful thing” needs an article: “a beautiful thing.” Develop complete sentences and check articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures.
