Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often observed that as people age, they alter their habits and viewpoints. I largely agree with this viewpoint because growing older brings significant changes in lifestyle and maturity.

To begin with, people's habits change drastically due to health and responsibilities. When people are young they enjoy their phase of life and eat a lot of processed food. However, as they grow older they become more serious about their health by eating healthy food. Adults take the responsibility to run their home when they start earning. For example, a young individual who used to party every night may start waking up early to prepare meal and exercise. Therefore, change in habits is natural which makes an individual reliaze of his responsibilities.

Furthermore, while a person grows up his opinions start changing after he gets more experience from life. Teenagers often have stubborn opinions because they practical experience. With age, culture exposure and job experience they learn to tolerate and become more open-minded. For instance, youngsters are rarely involved in social or political issues, but as they grow up they start voting. They finally decide to take part in social activities such as donations and charities. Thus, age helps to make a persons mind broad and they start doing innovative things.

To conclude, it is common to change habits and opinions as people grow older because they gets more experience of life. Not only the maturity, but their occupied schedule forces them to change their habits. This transformation is all natural which everybody has to go through one day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I largely agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both habits and opinions, giving relevant reasons: health and household responsibilities for changing habits, and life experience for changing viewpoints. The examples of a former partygoer adopting exercise and adults becoming involved in voting and charity help illustrate these points. This meets the task well, although some claims are broad or only briefly explained. For example, the link between earning, running a home, and changing routines could be developed further, and the point about young people’s political involvement would benefit from a more specific explanation of how experience changes their opinions. More precise development would make the support stronger.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around the two aspects of the question, and a conclusion. The progression from habits to opinions is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” make the organisation clear. Examples are generally placed alongside the ideas they support. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore,” “Thus,” and “because,” and a few sentences do not connect smoothly to the preceding point. For instance, the move from voting to donations and charities could be explained more explicitly. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make the relationship between each example and its main claim clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “responsibilities,” “processed food,” “experience,” “tolerate,” and “open-minded.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some topic-related expressions show an attempt to be precise. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “enjoy their phase of life,” “culture exposure,” and “make a persons mind broad.” There is also a spelling error in “reliaze,” and “innovative things” does not clearly express the intended idea in context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit naturalness and precision. Work on common collocations and choose words that express the specific change in behaviour or attitude you mean.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses beginning with “because,” “when,” and “as,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “For example, a young individual who used to party every night may start waking up early to prepare meal and exercise.” However, there are some errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. Examples include “they gets more experience,” “a persons mind,” and “Teenagers often have stubborn opinions because they practical experience,” where a verb is missing. The sentence beginning “Not only the maturity” is also not formed correctly. Review subject–verb agreement, possessives, and complete clause structure, then proofread to catch these errors while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
