Student answer (Band 6.5)

changing habits and opinions over time is an issue that has attracted considerable attention in recent years, with different views emerging about its importance and impact. In this essay, I will discuss the main arguments surrounding the view that individuals change their views over time and explain why I strongly agree with this statement.

One major reason for my position is that humans gain habits from their surrounding environment.. This is mainly because people learn from other experiences. For example, when people work or study abroad they will learn new habits from their colleagues. As a result, their views wil dramatically get changed. Moreover, during years of dealing with people from different cultures individuals gain new knowledge, which can also help people to understand things more clearly. Therefore, these points strongly support my position.

Another key reason for my position is that the responsibilities of people increased over time, particularly when having a family may change their way of behaving and making decisions. For instance, a friend of mine used to stay late outside and waste money on video games, but after he got married, he became more eager to save money and utilize his time. Furthermore, if people get more responsibilities, they would become more careful and conscious about everything, which may change their views on life. Admittedly, some people argue that responsibilities cannot change the way of thinking; however, the researchers proved it hugely impacts on our personality. Consequently, these points further support my agreement with the statement.

In conclusion, habits and opinons changing over time is an issue that should be carefully considered. Overall, I strongly agree with the statement because humans get affected by their surronding environment and the gained experiences during the life years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion, and you address both habits and opinions by discussing cultural exposure and increased responsibilities. The examples—working or studying abroad and your friend changing his spending after marriage—help support your reasons. You also acknowledge a counterargument, which adds some balance. These features make the response relevant and supported. However, the link between the examples and changes in opinions is less fully explained than the discussion of habits and behaviour; for instance, the first example says views change but does not show a specific change in belief. The claim about researchers is also general and unsupported. Develop these points with more precise explanation or evidence to make the argument consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from environmental influence to family responsibilities is logical, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This organisation is effective, though some linking is formulaic: both body paragraphs end with similar statements that the points support your position. The opening also announces that you will discuss the arguments, but the essay mainly develops reasons for agreement rather than exploring competing views. Improve cohesion by varying transitions and using clearer references between claims and examples, while avoiding repeated summary sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “surrounding environment,” “responsibilities,” “conscious,” and “personality.” These choices allow you to explain how experience and life changes may affect behaviour. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, such as “their views wil dramatically get changed,” “the life years,” and “the researchers proved it hugely impacts.” Spelling slips in “opinons” and “surronding” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, especially when describing change and evidence. For example, use “their views may change significantly” and “research suggests that this can affect personality.” Proofreading for spelling and word forms would make your vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “when,” “which,” and “if,” as well as a concession beginning “Admittedly.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the sentence structures show some range. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “the responsibilities of people increased over time,” the tense does not fit the general claim; “responsibilities increase as people get older” would be more suitable. “When having a family may change” is an awkward clause construction, and “it hugely impacts on our personality” has an unclear reference and an incorrect verb pattern. There are also punctuation issues, including the double full stop after “environment.” To move further, check tense consistency, clause construction, and sentence punctuation while retaining your complex structures.
