IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
People usually change the habits and opinions with their age. I firmly agree with this statement as with age people become physically inactive and mentally wise.
On the one hand, with the increasing age people become physically unfit and inactive as they lack energy and stamina. While it is often said that habits are difficult to change, people are forced to discontinue their everyday habit because of their body not being able to function properly. For instance, many sports person give up with their training schedules as they are not able to train more due to lack of physical well-being, which forces them to take more rest and inhabit different workout. Furthermore, their metabolism becomes slow and they cannot compete like their younger version.
On the other hand, people become wise and their understanding level increases while growing older. People generally accumulate huge amount of knowledge as they learn from their experience. It is believed that the information agained from experience far outweigh anything learned from books or others. That is why old age people generally change their perspective with time as they become more aware. For example, a businessman, who has been trading since more than thirty years, will not panic when the market goes to the correction as he knows that it is a regular phenomenon and the market will bounce back with time. Moreover, he/she will be more confident and can guide the new comers more efficiently because of his experience and understandings. In addition, he/she will change their strategy more easily.
In conclusion, many individuals change their habits and opinions with age as they become more wise and sometimes unfit for their regular endavour.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the opening: you firmly agree that habits and opinions change with age, and the conclusion returns to this view. Both parts of the claim are addressed: the first body paragraph explains changes to physical routines, while the second links experience to changing perspectives. The examples of athletes and an experienced businessman help extend these ideas, particularly the explanation of why a trader may remain calm during a market correction. The response therefore gives relevant reasons and support. To strengthen the argument further, avoid broad claims such as older people becoming physically unfit or wiser as if this applies to everyone, and develop more explicitly how these changes affect everyday habits and opinions beyond the examples given.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present contrasting reasons, and a conclusion summarises the argument. The progression from physical changes to accumulated experience is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the response. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, with several sentences beginning “Moreover,” “In addition,” or “For example.” The reference “he/she” also makes the businessman example less smooth, and the final sentence combines two points without clearly showing their relationship. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer references between sentences to make the flow more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “stamina,” “metabolism,” “perspective,” and “phenomenon,” and these choices help explain both physical and mental changes. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “training schedules” and “market correction.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “inhabit different workout,” “information agained,” “old age people,” and “regular endavour” make parts of the message less precise. Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “age,” “people,” and “experience.” Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling and word forms; more precise vocabulary would let you express the ideas with greater flexibility and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “as they lack energy and stamina” and the relative clause “who has been trading since more than thirty years.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the essay’s overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, though. For example, “many sports person give up” has a plural agreement problem, while “with the increasing age” and “since more than thirty years” show difficulties with articles and prepositions. In “he/she will change their strategy,” the pronoun reference is inconsistent. Review agreement, article use, and preposition patterns, and proofread longer sentences so that complex structures remain controlled.
