Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that as people get older, they easily modify their habits and point of views. I completely agree with this view because with age, people get matured. My agreement will be discussed in the forthcoming paragraphs.

One of the main reasons for my opinion is that individuals go through a lot of things and situations as they are getting old. This is mainly because they learn from their mistakes and observe other people’s decisions and actions. For example, if someone have taken a decision wrong in his or her personal or professional life , the person will eventually see the outcome and tend to learn from it so that he/she is not repeating the same mistake again. As a result, it enhances a person’s personality in terms of the opinions towards their decisions.

Another important reason is that if a particular habit is affecting the person’s health in a negative way. In other words, if a habit is in excess, it is called as addiction to something. For example, if someone likes to smoke but gradually it is affecting the person’s health. With the time, the individual will automatically try to avoid smoking as it is affecting his/her ability to work and take care of his/her dependents. Therefore, the habits are gradually changed over time as people are aged.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that with time, people learn a lot of things and as a result, they change their habits and update their opinions depending upon their experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: “I completely agree,” and the conclusion returns to the idea that experience changes habits and opinions. You address both parts of the prompt, using learning from mistakes to explain changing opinions and smoking to illustrate changing habits. These are relevant reasons, and the examples help make your response more than a list of claims. However, the development is uneven: the first example focuses on learning from a wrong decision but does not show clearly how a person’s opinion changes, while the smoking example explains a possible change without much detail about how age or experience prompts it. More specific explanation or a personal or observed example would make the support fuller and more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from learning through experience to changing a harmful habit is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the main reasons,” “Another important reason,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some linking is mechanical, however, and repeated phrases such as “For example” and “As a result” make connections feel formulaic. In the first body paragraph, the link between observing others’ actions, learning from mistakes, and changing opinions could be made more explicit. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references to connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “mistakes,” “outcome,” “addiction,” and “dependents.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, for example “modify their habits” and “depending upon their experiences.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “point of views” should be “points of view,” “get matured” is not idiomatic, and “called as addiction” is awkward. “With the time” and “as people are aged” also sound unnatural. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than formal-sounding phrases; for instance, use “mature,” “develop an addiction,” and “over time.” This would make your vocabulary more flexible and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if someone…”) and cause-and-effect sentences, and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “With the time, the individual will automatically try to avoid smoking…” However, there are several errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “if someone have taken” needs “has taken,” and “the person will… tend to learn… so that he/she is not repeating” would be more accurate as “does not repeat.” The sentence beginning “Another important reason is that if…” is incomplete in its current form. Work on complete clause structures and consistent verb forms while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
