IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that people tend to chnage their habits and opinions as they progress in age. I totally agree with idea because of increasing responsibilities and changing priorities. I will give my opinion on both ideas.

Firstly, as we grow older our responsibilities and priorities change. In young age we enjoy staying up late, eating fast food and playing video games because we have no tension for future. As we grow ,our habits change for one reason or other. For example, with each passing time we take our health very serious and stop eating junk food and start doing exercise. Also for our children we change our routine for ahealthy lifestyle.

Secondly, when we are younger we have limited exposure and we listen to people"s opinion and agree with them. As age progressess you get to meet multiple people and face challenges ,your opinion starts changing. For example you used to think professional success is more important than building relationships, but with time you believe emotionally stable relationships have more valuable.

Neverthless, its not the way people automatically change as they grom older ,it all depends on personal experiences and responsi

In conclusion, I strongly agree with that people habits and opinions change with older age because of changing priorities and reponsibilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I totally agree”) and conclusion, and you give two relevant reasons: changing responsibilities and priorities, and broader experience influencing opinions. The examples about improving health habits and reassessing the importance of relationships help connect these reasons to the question. However, the second example is not fully explained, and the point about children changing routines is brief. The final qualification—that change depends on personal experiences and responsibilities—could add useful nuance, but it is cut off and not developed. The response also does not meet the required minimum of 250 words, so there is limited space to extend and support your ideas. Develop each example more fully and complete the qualification to address the task more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. The examples are placed alongside the relevant reasons, and the conclusion returns to your position. However, some links between ideas are mechanical, and the progression within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, “As we grow, our habits change for one reason or other” does not clearly lead into the specific health example, while the sentence about children feels added rather than connected. The final body paragraph ends abruptly, interrupting the overall progression. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete point before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “responsibilities,” “priorities,” “exposure,” “challenges,” and “emotionally stable relationships.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both habits and opinions rather than relying entirely on basic language. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision, such as “chnage,” “progressess,” “grom,” “take our health very serious,” and “have more valuable.” Some phrases are also vague, including “for one reason or other” and “with each passing time.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions for changing routines and reassessing values would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because of increasing responsibilities”) and a conditional example (“you used to think … but with time…”). Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation are present. For example, “I totally agree with idea” needs an article, and “As age progressess you get to meet…” has an unclear subject and requires punctuation after the introductory clause. In “I strongly agree with that people habits and opinions change,” the clause pattern and possessive form are not controlled. The final sentence is incomplete, which also affects accuracy. Practise building complete sentences and check articles, possessives, and clause boundaries before submitting.
