Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are many people in the world and everyone has different perspectives and their way of living. Some people change their habits and their choices as they are getting older but some don't like to change their habits because of many reasons.

Firstly, some people believe they have to change their habits as they are growing old. They really think it's time to avoid having food which has high cholesterol because it is harmful for them. For example, many people when they were young, really enjoyed playing hide and seek and other similar games with their friends but now, they are not capable of playing with them because their habits have changed and they don't have an energy to play.

On the other hand, some people want to live their lives the same way they did when they were young. They don't want to spend their life by avoiding things they really liked doing. For instance, they have a mindset that they don't have much time now. So, instead of wasting their time on avoiding things, we have to focus more on how to take advantage of this life because once the time passes, it will not come back.

To conclude, everyone has the right to do whatever they want it's their life, but in my opinion, I agree with the people who really want to change their habits as they are getting older because if you can't take care of your health at this stage, you will face many hardships.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both habits and opinions, and your conclusion makes your own view clear: you agree that people should change habits as they age, particularly to protect their health. The examples about avoiding high-cholesterol food and older people no longer playing childhood games are relevant, but the second example mainly illustrates physical ability rather than a deliberate change in habits. The discussion of people who prefer to keep doing what they enjoy is also less fully explained, and opinions receive less attention than habits. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why people’s views may change with age and develop each example with a clear link to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding opinion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. However, some connections between ideas are not fully clear. For example, the childhood-games example is presented as evidence that habits change, although it seems to show reduced physical ability instead. The shift from “they” to “we” in “we have to focus more” also makes the viewpoint less consistent. Use linking phrases to explain how each example supports the paragraph’s point, and keep pronouns and references consistent. This would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on basic transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “perspectives,” “cholesterol,” “mindset,” and “hardships.” These choices show some range, but several phrases are imprecise or repetitive, which limits clarity and naturalness. For instance, “they don't have an energy to play” is not an idiomatic way to express reduced stamina, while “spend their life by avoiding things” is awkwardly phrased. “Change their habits” is repeated frequently, and the response could distinguish more precisely between routines, preferences, and beliefs. Aim for accurate collocations and a wider set of topic-specific expressions, such as “adopt healthier routines” or “reconsider long-held views.” Check word forms and phrasing so that attempts at less common vocabulary sound natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including clauses with “because,” “as,” and “when,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “they don't have an energy” needs the article “the” or a different construction, and “everyone has the right to do whatever they want it's their life” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. There are also shifts between “they” and “we,” which affect consistency. To improve, check articles and sentence boundaries, and practise combining ideas with accurate subordinate clauses and punctuation. Greater control of these details would make the varied sentence forms more reliable.
