Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern-technological era, it is extremely common for people to alter their habits and their opinions as they get older. I completely agree with the notion and in this essay I will discuss why this happened.

Firstly, old people tend to adopt new hobbies to add useful skills in their lifestyle. When people grow older they become more practical and want to adapt some skillful habits that lead to healthy lifestyle. For instance, in order to keep themseleves physically fit, they tend to join fitness clubs or gyms where they can indulge in physical and mental activities by doing yoga, lifting exercise equipments and sometimes playing chess in groups.

Secondly, gaining years of experience in respective fields leads to changing opinions and thoughts. As age increases, the members of the society become specialised in their fields and they widen their horizon in their area of interest. Taking an example od an adult thinking using a technology is a waste of time and society should stick to ancient techniques to manufacture any product. But what if he starts using new technology in his business and he benefited the most by adapting the same and become expert on using new production methods. Ultimately, he will get get years of experience in using and experimenting the different usages of new piece of technology and his thoughts will also adjuested that using new technology is cost effective as well as saves a lot of time.

Taking everything into consideration, I beleive with the growing age, due to these stated reasons people tend to shift both the habits and their opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I completely agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. Both parts of the prompt are addressed: the first body paragraph discusses changing habits through new activities, while the second explains how experience can alter opinions. The examples of joining a gym and adopting technology in business are relevant. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some stronger development, particularly in the technology example. However, the first reason is not fully connected to getting older, and the second example is lengthy and hypothetical, so its point becomes less clear. Explain more directly why age brings these changes and develop each example with a clear outcome to strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a concluding statement. The ideas generally progress from changing habits to changing opinions, so the overall arrangement is coherent. However, some connections are mechanical, and the long technology example contains several steps that are difficult to follow. For instance, “But what if he starts using new technology” shifts abruptly into a hypothetical question, while “Ultimately” introduces a conclusion within the example rather than clearly linking the paragraph’s reasoning. Use clearer sentence boundaries and refer back explicitly to the main point of each paragraph. This would make the progression smoother and reduce moments where the reader must infer how ideas relate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “practical,” “physically fit,” “specialised,” and “cost effective,” and the main meaning is usually understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “widen their horizon,” though this phrase is not used naturally in context. Several word-choice and collocation problems limit precision: “adapt some skillful habits,” “lifting exercise equipments,” and “different usages” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. Spelling errors such as “themseleves,” “beleive,” and “adjuested” also detract from control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary would help the examples communicate your ideas with less effort.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including time clauses (“When people grow older”) and conditional structures (“what if he starts using new technology”). The overall meaning remains accessible, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. In “As age increases, the members … become specialised,” the subject and phrasing are awkwardly constructed; “he benefited … and become expert” shifts verb forms, and “his thoughts will also adjuested” has an incorrect verb form. The long final sentence in the second body paragraph also combines several clauses without clear control, making the relationship between them harder to follow. Work on consistent tense and verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries. Shortening complex sentences would help you retain variety while improving accuracy.
