It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

It is common for individuals to change their daily habits and their viewpoints when they get older. I completely agree with this statement because responsibilities and life circumstances change people's daily lives, and life experiences shape their decision-making and change their opinions.

Do responsibilities change people's daily routine? Of course, yes, because obligations and daily circumstances change people's behaviour as well as their work routine. They become more disciplined and responsible, which results in changing habits as they grow up.For example, my father's friend

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

Your opening clearly answers the question: “I completely agree,” and gives two relevant reasons—changing responsibilities and the influence of life experience. However, the response develops only the first reason, and even that discussion stops at a general claim about becoming “more disciplined and responsible.” The example beginning “my father’s friend” is unfinished, while the effect of life experiences on opinions is not explained or illustrated. The task is therefore addressed only partially, with ideas remaining very limited and under-developed. To strengthen the response, explain how responsibilities alter a specific habit, then develop a separate example showing how an experience changed someone’s opinion. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so there is not enough development to cover the task fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic line of organisation: the introduction states your position and reasons, followed by a paragraph that begins to discuss changing routines. The question “Do responsibilities change people's daily routine?” signals the paragraph’s focus, and “For example” attempts to introduce supporting evidence. However, the response ends abruptly during that example, so the progression is incomplete and the second reason from the introduction is never taken up. The rhetorical question and “Of course, yes” also make the development feel somewhat mechanical rather than smoothly connected. Use complete paragraphs for each main reason, and connect each claim to an explanation and a finished example. This would make the overall progression clearer and cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “responsibilities,” “life circumstances,” “viewpoints,” “decision-making,” and “disciplined.” These choices make your main position understandable. However, the range is limited in this short response, and several expressions are broad or repetitive: “change” appears repeatedly, while “daily lives,” “daily routine,” and “work routine” cover similar ground without adding much precision. “Daily routine” would also be more natural as a plural in the question you pose. Aim for more precise alternatives such as “reshape routines,” “revise their beliefs,” or “adapt to new obligations,” and use them in developed explanations. A wider range of accurate topic vocabulary would help you express the distinction between changes in habits and changes in opinions more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Your writing includes both simple sentences and some attempts at complex structures. For example, the opening uses a subordinate clause—“because responsibilities and life circumstances change people's daily lives”—and the final sentence links a result to its cause with “which results in.” Meaning is generally clear, but control is uneven. There is a missing space after the full stop in “grow up.For example,” and the final example is left as a fragment: “For example, my father's friend”. The question “Do responsibilities change people's daily routine?” also shifts into a direct question within the paragraph, interrupting the sentence pattern. Check sentence boundaries and punctuation, and complete examples as full sentences. More varied, complete sentence structures would improve accuracy and readability.
