IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Habits and opinions are easily influenced by your experience or the stage of life you are in. In my opinion, I agree that as people grow older, their opinions and habits tend to change.
When we are children, our habits usually revolve things like reading a story book before going to sleep, or playing cricket every weekend. However, as we grow up, it changes according to the free time we have available, or how we prioritise learning new skills that might help us in our careers. As a result, habits of adults usually include utilising their free time to learn AI technology or new excel shortcuts, and going to the gym to keep themselves fit. So, with changing stages of life, the activites that are a part of your daily routine also evolve.
On the other hand, perspective is something that changes with experience. For some people, they might believe God is not real but when they experience a miracle like making it alive from a life-threatining accident, the experience changes their opinion. As people age, their life situation changes, like a student becomes a full time corporate employee, or a single person gets married to someone and starts a family. These experiences change the way of how people see things in their life, makes them live a different life and hence change the way they view certain things
To conclude, though some people might not experience certain things growing up that changes their opinion about something, I believe for majority their life experiences do shape them in the way they are in the later stage of their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that habits and opinions tend to change with age, and the conclusion maintains this view. You address both parts of the topic, explaining that routines shift as people’s available time and priorities change, while opinions are influenced by life experience. The examples of a child’s weekend activities, career learning, marriage and family make the response relevant. However, some support is general rather than fully explained: the example of surviving an accident is dramatic, but the link between that experience and a changed belief is asserted rather than explored. Developing one or two examples more specifically, and qualifying broad claims about what adults do, would make the ideas more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on habits and opinions, and a conclusion. The contrastive opening to the opinions paragraph (“On the other hand”) helps signal the shift in focus, and the ideas generally progress from childhood routines to adult priorities, then from experience to changing perspectives. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger progression. However, links are occasionally mechanical or unclear. For example, “So” and “As a result” both mark consequences, while the long final sentence of the third body paragraph joins several ideas without clear boundaries. The reference in “it changes” is also not fully precise. Use clearer sentence breaks and more exact links between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss routines, priorities and changing perspectives, including “prioritise,” “life situation,” “experience” and “daily routine.” Some choices show an attempt to be specific, such as “AI technology” and “Excel shortcuts,” and the meaning remains clear overall. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors limit precision: “revolve things like” is not a natural construction, “making it alive” is unclear, and “the way of how people see things” is awkward. There are also spelling slips such as “activites” and “life-threatining.” Aim for more natural combinations and proofread carefully; for example, use “centre on activities such as,” “survive an accident,” and “the way people see the world.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including time clauses (“When we are children…”) and conditional phrasing (“though some people might not experience…”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the response includes some successful longer structures. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “our habits usually revolve things like,” the verb pattern needs a preposition; “the activities … evolve” is followed by a shift from “our” to “your”; and “the experience changes their opinion” shifts from plural “people” to singular “their.” The final body sentence also has faulty coordination: “changes the way …, makes them live … and hence change.” Separate the ideas and check agreement, pronoun consistency and verb forms when constructing longer sentences.
