IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often observed that individuals undergo significant transformations in their habits and view points as they age. I completely agree with this statement, as life experience, maturity and shifting responsibilities naturally reshape human behavior and mindset.

Firstly, people often develop different habits as their priorities change with age. For instance, young people may spend may spend most of their free time socializing with friends, playing video games or using social media. However as they become adults, they usually have more responsibilities, such as managing a job, maintaining a household and raising children. As a result, they may adopt healthier routines, manage their time more carefully and focus on their long term goals.

Secondly, people's opinion may get change significantly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear from the opening: “I completely agree,” and you give relevant reasons about changing priorities and responsibilities. The example contrasting young people’s leisure activities with adults’ work and family duties supports the point about habits. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: the second reason about changing opinions is introduced but not explained, and there is no example or concluding statement. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so the ideas remain substantially under-developed. To strengthen the answer, explain how experience or new responsibilities can alter specific opinions, support this with a relevant example, and develop both reasons before concluding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, followed by paragraphs signposted with “Firstly” and “Secondly.” The first body paragraph also follows a logical sequence from changing priorities to adult responsibilities and then new routines. However, the progression stops abruptly after “people’s opinion may get change significantly,” leaving the second point unfinished and the overall argument incomplete. Some linking is also mechanical, relying mainly on “Firstly,” “However,” “As a result,” and “Secondly.” Develop each paragraph fully, use clear references to connect examples to your claims, and add a conclusion that returns to your position. This would make the organisation more complete and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some appropriate topic vocabulary, including “significant transformations,” “responsibilities,” “maintaining a household,” and “long term goals,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There is also some variety in how you describe change, such as “undergo” and “reshape.” However, the range is limited by the short response, and several choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “view points” is normally written as “viewpoints,” “people’s opinion” needs a plural form in this general statement, and “may get change” is not a natural expression. The repeated “may spend” also suggests insufficient editing. Aim for precise collocations such as “opinions may change” and check word forms and spelling during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms. For example, the opening uses a subordinate clause beginning “as they age,” and the first body paragraph includes a conditional contrast with “as they become adults.” Most of the completed sentences communicate their meaning clearly. However, there are some noticeable errors: “people may spend may spend” repeats the verb, “However as they become adults” needs punctuation after the introductory linker, and “people’s opinion may get change” has an incorrect verb construction. The final sentence is incomplete, so it does not demonstrate control of a full clause. Proofread for repeated words and verb forms, and complete each sentence; then extend the range of accurate complex structures.
