IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
We often used to do things in our childhood that we don't do now. For example, the game of cricket which could force you to bunk classes at school is now no longer your area of interest. Building Legos which was once a fascinating habit is now seem waste of time. Similarly, a football club which was once your favourite club is no longer excites you as the key player of their team moved to a different club.
I do agree, with the passage of time and as we get older, our habits and opinions get altered. And all of this alteration are resultant of the experience we gain. I remember, my fondest activity of my leisure time was reading only fictional books as it used to help expand my creative mind. But now, I like to read motivational books and bigographies as they helps me to work on my own personality. I remember also my college days when a political leader and his party seemed to be the only saviour for my country's wellbeing. But as I grew old and started analysing things based on facts, rather than emotions, I changed my stance. Lastly, on a gentle note, during my childhood, my dreams changed rapidly. One day I wanted to be an Astronaut and the other day I wanted to become a Bus driver. That rapid changes in the dreams was indeed due to the things I was learning as I was growing older.
In a summary, as you get old, the habits and opinions also get "experienced". That's why the saying seems adequate - "people learn from their mistakes".

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear: you agree that habits and opinions change with age, and you address both parts of the question. The examples about moving from fictional to motivational books and revising your political view are relevant and help explain how experience can prompt change. The childhood career ambitions also support the point about changing habits or preferences, although the link to the question is less fully explained than in the other examples. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons behind each change and clarify how age, rather than simply new information or circumstances, contributes to it. Your conclusion restates your view, but could draw together the main reasons more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from examples of childhood interests to your agreement and personal experiences, then to a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “Similarly,” “Lastly,” and “That’s why” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the opening paragraph lists several examples without clearly connecting them to the central argument, and the second paragraph contains several distinct examples that would be easier to follow if each were developed in a more deliberate sequence. Some transitions feel mechanical, particularly “I remember also” and “In a summary.” Use clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing so readers can see how each example supports the claim that age and experience change habits and opinions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss changing interests and beliefs, including “creative mind,” “analysing things based on facts,” and “changed my stance.” These phrases communicate your meaning, and the examples give you opportunities to use topic-related language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “get ‘experienced’,” “the only saviour for my country’s wellbeing,” and “a fascinating habit.” There is also a spelling error in “bigographies.” Aim for more natural phrasing and precise vocabulary, especially when describing personal development and political change. For example, “become more mature” would express the conclusion more naturally than “get experienced.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as” and “when,” and most of your meaning remains understandable. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “all of this alteration are” should use a singular verb or a plural noun, while “they helps” should be “they help.” In “Building Legos … is now seem waste of time,” the verb pattern is faulty; a clearer form is “Building with Lego now seems like a waste of time.” The sentence about the football club also has an incorrect verb form (“no longer excites”). Check subject–verb agreement and simplify sentences when needed, while continuing to practise complex clauses.
