Student answer (Band 6.0)

The topic under discussion nowadays is that can people change over the time, in their habits and opinions. Some argue they cannot as the way they think can't be altered whereas some believe that people under go character development while experiencing life and come out as a newly developed people every single time. I wholeheartedly agree with the latter notion.

Life takes a lot unexpected turns, humbles you in many ways through different life experiences, while interacting with people. There is always room for improvement and character development. When you interact with people you understand different perspectives and how people can think about a certain situation from a completely different angle, that alters ones thinking process thus formulate different opinions over time.

Different experiences in life, for instance a friendship ending makes you learn about yourself and your friend that later shapes you thus moving forward, makes you more careful, vigilant and shapes you for the better.

Another point to be noted is people pick up on habits, for example if your friend's circle goes to the gym regularly even if you are not a regular you would still try to alter your habit. Company really does matter in shaping ones personality and habits. Surrounding with like minded people who encourage you to become the better version of yourself is very important.

In concussion, i believe humans are evolving every single day due different life experiences, human interactions and different debating topics. As social media is expanding people are exposed to variety of ideas helping them shape themselves and thus evolving.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I wholeheartedly agree,” and the response stays focused on how experiences and social contact can change habits and opinions. You give relevant reasons, including learning from different perspectives, a friendship ending, and friends’ influence on exercise habits. These examples support the main argument and address both habits and opinions. To make the discussion more fully developed, explain the examples in greater depth—for instance, specify how the friendship experience changed a particular opinion, rather than saying generally that it makes someone “more careful.” The final point about social media is relevant but brief and could be linked more explicitly to the central argument. Overall, the response presents a clear view and relevant support, though some ideas are more general than fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from life experiences to social influence is logical, and phrases such as “Another point to be noted” help signal a new idea. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The second paragraph moves from interacting with people to a friendship ending without a smooth explanation of how the example develops the preceding point. The conclusion introduces social media rather suddenly, rather than drawing together the two main reasons. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as in “that alters ones thinking process,” where the referent of “that” is not precise. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and make the conclusion synthesise the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss personal development, including “perspectives,” “character development,” “vigilant,” and “evolving.” These choices help communicate the topic, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “Life takes a lot unexpected turns,” though some combinations are not natural or precise. For example, “come out as a newly developed people” is awkward, and “different debating topics” does not clearly express the intended idea. Spelling and word-form slips such as “concussion” for “conclusion” and “under go” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make your vocabulary more precise without needing unnecessarily complex language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast in the opening and conditional examples such as “if your friend's circle goes to the gym regularly.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening clause, “The topic under discussion nowadays is that can people change,” has incorrect question structure; use an indirect form such as “whether people can change.” Other examples include “Life takes a lot unexpected turns” (missing article), “ones thinking process” (possessive form), and “thus formulate different opinions” (the verb form does not fit the sentence). Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need attention, particularly in the long opening sentence and the final paragraph. Review articles, agreement, possessives, and clause construction while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
