Student answer (Band 5.0)

Although some people believe that it is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older, I believe that after a certain age, people become addicted to their habits and find it dificult to change.

To begin with, some people beileve that it is easy for them to change their habits when they age. This is because when a person matures, they tend to behave according to the requirements. Furthermore, when people age, they change their person priorities to their family priorities. Fornr example, a person might change his temperament for the family, because they know that it can affect their family peace. As a result, they tend to live calm, which can improve their family relationships.

However, others believe that when people age, they find it difficult to change their behaviour. When a person lives with the same interests for a period of time, they tend to become addicted to their childhood behaviour. Furthermore, some people love to play the same sport, which they used to play in their childhood. For instance, a child who used to play cricket in his childhood, might play the same sport when they advance in age. As a result, they might find peace playing the same sports and can be selected for a bigger team.

To conclude, some people believe that changing behaviour can be an easy task for them, I believe that once a person get older, they find it hard to change his interest and behavior for the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

Your position is clear: you disagree that people commonly change as they age, arguing that established habits and interests are difficult to alter. You also acknowledge the opposing view and give examples about family behaviour and continuing to play cricket. However, the discussion of opinions is largely missing; most of the response concerns habits or behaviour, so the task is only partly addressed. The examples are relevant but brief, and the claim that a person may be selected for a bigger team is not clearly connected to the main argument. The response is 237 words, 13 words below the 250-word minimum; the 18 words copied from the prompt are excluded. Develop both habits and opinions, and explain each example more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally stay focused, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “However” and “To conclude” help readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited: several points are introduced but not fully connected or explained, particularly the link between playing cricket and being selected for a bigger team. The repeated “some people believe” framing and frequent “Furthermore” and “As a result” make cohesion feel mechanical. The conclusion also repeats the position rather than drawing together the main reasoning. Use clearer links between claim, explanation and example, and vary transitions and referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “habits,” “interests,” “temperament,” “family relationships” and “behaviour.” Some phrases show an attempt to express more specific ideas, such as “family priorities” and “childhood behaviour.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the argument less clear: “addicted to their habits” is too strong for simply finding habits difficult to change, while “live calm” and “person priorities” are not natural expressions. There are also spelling errors, including “dificult,” “beileve” and “Fornr.” Build a more precise range of collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “Although,” “because” and “when.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main meaning is usually understandable. However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately. For example, “some people believe that changing behaviour can be an easy task for them, I believe…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. There are also errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “once a person get older,” and unclear pronoun consistency in “a person… their” and “a child… they.” The sentence “they tend to live calm” also has a grammatical form problem. Practise accurate clause joining, subject–verb agreement and consistent pronoun reference.
