Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is not uncommon for people to change their opinions and behaviors as they age. While some people disagree with this phenomenon, I am of the opinion that growth could bring about positive or negative changes in a persons reasoning and morals, the former should be enforced.

To begin, the interests of individuals tends to undergo changes as they grow, intermingle and come to reality of life, their hobbies are affected in general such that they either lose interest or develop greater zeal in them. For example, an adult who loves watching football today may have little to no interest in doing such in his early years of life but as growth happens, he discovers new interest in football sporting activities and now enjoys every beat of it.

Furthermore, as a person grows, his circle of friends also grows. In elementary, college, and university days, we make different friends from different families and walks of life. This interaction, affects our perspective of life such that an introverted individual becomes lively and sociable with his clique thereby promoting the persons personality.

Subsequently, with increased growth in cycle, we learn how to engage in teamwork and communicate our ideas and feelings better which will not only help our personal life, but in general promote our academic and work-life in the future.

In conclusion, changes can be seen in the opinions and behaviors of people as they grow. This changes could be beneficial or detrimental to the individual's life. I believe that positive changes that promotes individual life, like good communication skills and socialization should be encouraged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that people change as they age and argue that positive changes should be encouraged. The discussion of changing interests and the influence of friendships is relevant, and the examples help illustrate these points. However, the response focuses more on habits, social development and communication than on changes in opinions, which is central to the question. The football example is also difficult to follow because it compares an adult’s current interest with an earlier stage without clearly explaining the change. Develop one example showing how a person’s views changed, and explain the causes and consequences of that change. This would make the response address both habits and opinions more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from changing interests to the influence of social circles and then to communication skills. Linking phrases such as “To begin,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to identify. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some flexibility in organising related points. However, “Subsequently” does not clearly signal the relationship between the preceding point and the next one, and the paragraph about teamwork feels like an additional claim rather than a developed continuation. Some references, such as “this phenomenon” and “This changes,” are not fully precise. Use clearer links between cause and effect and ensure each paragraph develops one central idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “interests,” “perspective,” “introverted,” “sociable” and “detrimental.” These choices help communicate ideas about personal development and social change. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “come to reality of life,” “greater zeal in them,” “increased growth in cycle” and “enjoys every beat of it.” “Behaviors” is relevant, but the essay could use more precise language for changes in opinions, such as shifts in beliefs or attitudes. Some word forms and collocations also need attention, including “persons personality.” Aim for straightforward, natural phrasing and check that each expression fits its context; this will improve precision without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with subordinate clauses, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, possessives and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “the interests of individuals tends” should use a plural verb, while “a persons reasoning” needs a possessive form. In “This changes could be beneficial,” the demonstrative should agree with the plural noun, and “changes that promotes” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. The opening sentence after the introduction joins two independent ideas with a comma, making the structure difficult to control. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and divide long sentences where necessary. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen your otherwise clear communication.
