IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
I agree about this statement because I believe that change is constant specially as we grew older a lot of things happened and there are situations that makes us more mature and realistic that why habits and opions do really change as we get older. I also believe that not all change is a bad thing some changes do really make our life better and it will makes us more better as long as we choose to change the bad habbits and character that we have.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
Your position is clear from the opening: “I agree,” and you give a relevant general reason, saying that life experiences can make people “more mature and realistic.” You also add the idea that some changes can improve life. However, the response does not develop these points with explanations or examples, and it says little about how both habits and opinions change as people age. The required minimum of 250 words is not met; at 86 words, the response is substantially short, which leaves the task only minimally addressed. To strengthen it, explain specific changes people may make at different ages and support each reason with a relevant example from experience or general knowledge.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic line of thought: you state agreement, give a reason related to maturity, and then qualify your view by noting that change can be positive. The linking phrases “because,” “also,” and “as long as” help show these relationships. However, all the ideas are compressed into one paragraph and largely one long sentence, so the reader has little sense of progression or separation between points. The final idea about changing bad habits is not developed into a distinct supporting point. Use separate paragraphs for your position, reasons and examples, and conclusion; within them, connect each new idea clearly rather than relying on a single extended sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “constant,” “mature,” “realistic,” and “habits,” and the reader can understand your general view. However, the range is narrow and several spelling or word-choice problems reduce accuracy: “specially” does not fit the intended meaning of “especially,” “opions” is misspelled, and “more better” is not an appropriate comparative form. “Bad habbits and character” is also imprecise and contains a spelling error. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “life experiences,” “develop a more mature outlook,” and “unhelpful habits.” Proofreading spelling and avoiding repeated basic wording would make your ideas clearer and more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to connect several ideas using subordinate clauses, as in “because I believe” and “as long as we choose,” so the response shows some sentence variety. However, the long opening sentence contains several grammatical problems that make the structure difficult to control: “as we grew older” shifts tense, “situations that makes” has subject–verb disagreement, and “that why” is missing a verb. The phrase “it will makes” also combines an auxiliary with an incorrect verb form. These errors occur in a very short response and limit clarity. Build shorter, complete sentences first, checking tense, agreement and verb forms; then add complex clauses where you can control their structure accurately.
