Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days, it is not a big deal for individuals to change their habits and thoughts as they become older. In my point of view, there are number of reasons behind this phenomena.

To begin with, there are numerous reasons why folks change their behaviour as they get older. First of all, they have more responsibilities when they get old. They have a family, and a person has the responsibility to take care his/her family in a good way. Nowadays, everything is very expensive, like education, medicine, groceries, etc. Due to this, they change their habits and opinions.

Furthermore, at a young age, they spend most of their time playing games, going out with friends and watching television. But when they face some difficulties in their life regarding getting a good job and better career opportunities. Then they become mature and start thinking about their better future. Apart from this, they change their eating habits too and pay attention to a healthy lifestyle. At a young age, they like to eat unhealthy food, such as fast food, canned food and so on. For example, some people start exercising and eating a balanced diet for good health.

In my opinion, some people's opinions change because of their experience and knowledge. When they are young, they may have a limited understanding of certain situations. As they grow older, they meet different people, face challenges, and learn valuable lessons. As a result, they may develop a different point of view. For instance, a person who once believed that education is not important, but after facing some difficulties in getting a good job then he or she understand the value of good education.

To sum up, I strongly agree that people change their habits and opinions as they get older because life experience, new responsibilities and increased knowledge are the main causes of these changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you strongly agree that habits and opinions change with age. You address both parts of the question and give relevant reasons, including increased family responsibilities, career pressures, health choices, and learning through experience. The examples about adopting a balanced diet and recognising the value of education help support your points. This is a solid response because the ideas are extended and generally relevant. Some support, however, remains broad: the claim that rising costs lead people to change their habits and opinions is not explained in detail, and the first paragraph’s reference to “a number of reasons” could be followed by a more direct statement of your position. Develop the cause-and-effect links more precisely to make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction through reasons and examples to a concluding summary. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “To sum up” help readers follow the argument. The progression is mostly logical, and the conclusion returns to the stated position. However, some connections feel mechanical or abrupt. For example, “But when they face some difficulties…” is followed by a sentence fragment beginning “Then they become mature,” while the shift from financial responsibilities to youthful leisure could be linked more smoothly. References such as “they” also sometimes have a broad or unclear antecedent. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make links between each reason and its consequence more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss responsibilities, work, health, and personal development, including “career opportunities,” “balanced diet,” “valuable lessons,” and “point of view.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some topic-appropriate phrasing. At times, however, wording is imprecise or repetitive: “habits and thoughts” is less exact than the task’s “habits and opinions,” and “everything is very expensive” is broad and informal. There are also collocation and word-form problems, such as “take care his/her family” and “this phenomena.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more specific expressions and check that common word combinations are idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “as,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some sentence forms are controlled, such as “As they grow older, they meet different people, face challenges, and learn valuable lessons.” However, errors occur in verb forms, sentence boundaries, agreement, and articles. For example, “there are number of reasons” needs an article, “take care his/her family” is missing a grammatical element, and “a person who once believed … but after facing … then he or she understand” is an incomplete and faulty construction. The sentence beginning “But when they face…” is also left without a complete main clause. Practise joining dependent clauses to complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
